Palin Offers $150 For Fresh-Killed Wolf Legs

State game managers will pay people to kill wolves in an effort to boost Alaska's predator- control program.

The 180 volunteer pilots and aerial gunners who are the backbone of the program can get $150 in cash for turning in legs of freshly killed wolves, Gov. Sarah Palin's office announced Tuesday.

Previously, the only reward was a wolf pelt they could sell, usually for somewhere between $200 and $300, said Bruce Bartley, Department of Fish and Game spokesman.

4. There isn't
There is an issue with dwindling populations of elk and moose (not due to the wolves but other factors such as climate change and habitat disruption). As a result, any moose/elk kill by a wolf reduces the number "available" to hunters. Her thinking, one less wolf means one more elk for a hunter to kill instead.

people can kill those animals .... it shows a stunning lack of knowledge about

9. Joanne - from the few (half-being-snarky) responses you have received, it is clear that most of DU
does not object to this kind of barbaric behavior. That is a sadder statement than Palin's actions - we know that pukes do not care about Mother Nature except if it serves their narrow, selfish purposes (e.g., preserving a target population). But, to realize that most of "us" also support cruelty like this is discouraging.

Those of us who do truly care have our work cut out. We have to fight against all the pukes and most of the Dems. That will be tough.

Anchorage Alaska Town Hall Meeting
"Who is Sarah Palin?"

..............

Question I gave to Charlie Gibson to ask Palin:

I would like to know how Sarah Palin can say she is a Christian and follow Christian values when God said "let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground." (Gen. 1:26)And Gov. Palin supports aerial killing of wolfs and bears. There are two videos on YouTube from Defenders of Wildlife on this everyone should watch!

11. Her deadly wolf program
"With a disdain for science that alarms wildlife experts, Sarah Palin continues to promote Alaska's policy to gun down wolves from planes."

"Says Jans, co-sponsor of the losing initiative to outlaw aerial wolf hunting: "This is a reflection of a somebody who doesn't have any use for science."

19. oh my
that is a very powerful video.

My 9 y/o daughter was asking about Palin the other day. She asked me what Palin has done in Alaska. I couldn't stop myself before I said "she's a wolf killer" and my daughter was shocked. I explained the aerial hunting and made my daughter cry. It reminded me of when I was her age and I first learned of the slaughter of the baby harp seals.

25. Well, it starts with narrator discussing alaska wildlife with beautiful aerial pics of animals...
Then he goes on to tell about a little known secret, about aerial wolf hunting. It plays like something you would see on the discovery channel. They then show aerial footage of a low flying plane and a wolf running in the open tundra, and they discuss what guns are used, they do it in winter so there's no where to hide.... They discuss how difficult it is to shoot a wolf from a plane with a shotgun, how it riddles them with bullets, often not killing them instantly and sometimes they end up just wearing them out by chasing the wounded animals. It does show them shooting a wolf and the wolf running wounded, it's absolutely horrible to me. I understand why you don't do them, but for those who hunt or who think it's no biggie, this video will hit home to them. Then, it shares details and statistics in the end. I saw those graphic pics someone posted the other day, and this wasn't as bad as that. It doesn't go on forever, and you get the point very quickly. Imo, it shows just enough to convince someone that this is cruel and unnecessary.

29. A great link on this: www.GrizzlyBay.org (up since 2007, before VP nominee)
Here's a snippet:
"I shudder at the thought of Sarah Palin as Vice President because I live in Alaska and know how violently misaligned Alaskan culture is with the rest of the US. Not only is there an entire country physically separating Alaska from the US, there is a cultural divide just as wide. Sarah Palin governs a culture for the most part stuck in the 19th century. Although she has an 80% approval rating as governor, keep in mind that most Alaskans are very different from most people in the U.S.

Nearly everyone in Alaska owns several guns, enjoys hunting, and thinks we should drill for oil anywhere and everywhere. In Alaska many people still use out-houses, rarely bath or comb their hair, and it’s normal not to have electricity and running water. Does this sound like you and your family? If New York city had the population density of Alaska there would be one person living on Manhattan Island. Alaska is like no other state and in most regards it’s a foreign country with a foreign culture.

Alaska was colonized by greedy people who wanted to get rich fast through the consumption of natural resources (minerals, wildlife, and oil). Little has changed in a hundred years and every industry in Alaska still exploits the land, sea, or wildlife. Natural resource extraction is the backbone of Alaska and it runs through every aspect of Alaskan life. Sarah Palin represents the modern face of these pioneer day interests.

If Sarah Palin were to ever become president we can kiss the natural world goodbye along with the freedom we treasure so much in this country. Sarah Palin is bad for the planet and bad for America!"

...keeping this thread kicked.

27. Why the fuck do they even want to control wolves?
Just let the population rise and drop natually.

If there are too many wolves, the extra ones starve. If there are too few, then there are lots of prey animals, and the few wolves out there can breed quickly with lots of prey.

In the end, it reaches equilibrium, and shit like Palin's attempts to "control" the wolf population simply result in overpopulation of prey animals like caribou and moose and such, which turns them into pests.

Aerial Hunting: Wings of Death

August 14, 2008

©Defenders of Wildlife

More wolves will die like this one unless Alaskans vote yes on Measure 2.

On August 26, Alaskans once again have the chance to stop the cruel and unsporting practice of shooting animals from aircraft. Ballot measure 2 would prohibit the shooting of wolves and grizzly bears from the air or by using a plane to land and shoot.

Currently, the Airborne Hunting Act bans the hunting or harassing of wildlife from aircraft. The act was meant to address the obvious humane concerns associated with chasing animals down to the point of exhaustion with a plane or helicopter and then shooting them.

The Act does, however, allow state wildlife officials to use airplanes for wildlife management activities. Alaska is currently exploiting this exception by allowing sport hunters to chase and shoot animals from the air.

By allowing sport hunters to hunt predators from the air, the state wildlife agency aims to boost the numbers of other game animals such as moose and caribou so that these animals may in turn be killed by sport hunters.

Alaskans have twice stopped this circumvention and banned the cruel and unfair practice of shooting wolves from aircraft and twice the legislature has ignored the will of its citizens and overturned the law.

Animal advocates, environmentalists and hunters agree. Shooting animals from the air or chasing them to the point of exhaustion and then shooting them violates all standards of fair chase hunting. It is like shooting fish in a barrel.

We are confident that voters will show the Alaska legislature that enough is enough—Alaskans will not stand for this inhumane land-and-shoot hunting of wolves and bears.
