McCain Now Winning Majority of Independents
Majority of independents now prefer him over Obama, 52% to 37%

by Lydia Saad

PRINCETON, NJ -- John McCain's 6 percentage-point bounce in voter support spanning the Republican National Convention is largely explained by political independents shifting to him in fairly big numbers, from 40% pre-convention to 52% post-convention in Gallup Poll Daily tracking.

48. Same here
I tend to think independents are republicans who want attention - but they couch it in "doing their research."

6. Oh no! They got a convention bounce! It's not good! It's not good!
But other polls show his convention bounce is ebbing! But we shouldn't look at those! Just the ones that worry us!

Not good, folks! I'll find another poll to enhance our worry as soon as I can find it.

10. I have a question --
how/where are these people getting the info that is making them switch?

We know it's usually only us who watch Obama's and Biden's speeches (probably the same for the hard core Reps), it's usually only us who tune into Keith (and now Rachel!).

So is it the news coverage about Palin that is bringing this ticket to their awareness, and the lack of news coverage for us?

Actually, we're probably the only ones who really pay attention to the news coverage, too.

I just don't get how/where people are getting their info that makes them lean in one direction or another.

Any input?

35. My argument against that is that although the DEMS would get behind
the ticket, Hillary's long-standing high negatives with Republicans would act as a lightening rod to bring out voters to vote AGAINST her.

What are your thoughts on that?

53. I understand what you're saying, but
but what about my opinion that the high Rep Hillary negatives could energize people to come out to vote against her? Again, it's not us, it's THEM I'm worried about.

(I should note, that I've never understood the reasoning/logic behind the Reps intense negative attitude toward her, but it exists nonetheless, and I'm thinking strategically here.)

Frankly, I have more respect for strident Republicans who support Bush and McCain with equal glee. At least they know what they want. At least they've taken a position. Anybody who hasn't taken a side in the last 8 years, whether that be Repuke or Dem, is someone who you will find cares more about American Idol and college football than they do about their country.

45. you are sooooooo off-base
Independents are there because they have taken a position - and it is not in sync with the corporate driven parties.

Just because you live by party loyalties does not mean all progressives/liberals share them.

27. Relax. McCain's been leading with 60% of independents since the start of the election season
Only recently, leading up to the Democratic convention, did it begin to turn in Obama's favor. These results are right in line with the previous ones: of decided independents, McCain gets 58% (52/(52+37)).

Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 03:37 PM by SoCalDem
3 or 4 times between now and Nov..

With as MUCH difference between the parties, as there is, I don't honestly see how ANYONE could call themselves independent these days.. I would like to see them NOT allowed to vote in primaries too.. Let them actually register one way of the other, and then participate in that party's primaries..

In general elections everyone gets the same ballot, so big f'n deal..take your ballot and vote for people from 4 different parties if you like.. there's nothing stopping you..

I am so sick of hearing about the wishywashy independents whose asses must be kissed hourly..These are people who are too lazy or too dumb to read up and decide what their own standards are.. They like the shiny objects and empty promises..shame on the rest of us for making them feel more important than they deserve to be.,.

Those Reagan democrats/independent were REPUBLICANS who were a bit ashamed to admit it..

You don't veer sharply to the right (or to the left) and pick up a ton of independents as a result. It's ridiculous to think that that many voters would suddenly and en masse forget the past eight years of Republican disasters and sucker for any more of it.
