(CNN) — John McCain's campaign hit back hard at Joe Biden Tuesday after the Democratic VP candidate appeared to suggest Republicans who do not support stem cell research — like GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin — are lacking in their support of children with disabilities.

Stem cell research is a campaign issue and Joe Biden told the truth. What a shame exposing hypocrisy is called out as "a new low".

How much do you want to bet that Palin doesn't get a chance to go out on the campaign trail alone? One good question will destroy her.

35. Oooo, Joe is smooth!
“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy…and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect,” he said. “Well, guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?”

-------

Doesn't mention anyone, doesn't accuse anyone, just asks a rhetorical question. And how about the way he phrased that? "the joy and the difficulty..."? He said that without seeming corny--that's goosebump good.

Go JObama! (Okay, that has the wrong order, but I can't make ObamaJoe work... :( )

she cut special education by 63% in her first budget as governor, didn't she? One of my Republican friends said "Well, she didn't have a special needs kid yet". So? She only gives a shit when it affects her directly? I mentioned Michael Fox as an example of that, and my friend said that he was a liberal. Not as far as I knew, he wasn't.

44. Not sure this a discussion Biden wants
Seriously.

McCain-Palin support stem cell research. What they do not support is embryonic stem cell research.

Here's why this isn't a debate Biden wants to have.

Number of approved medical treatments from embryonic stem cells: 0
Number of approved medical treatments from all other types of stem cells: over 75

If we're going to go with a science based policy, ignoring embryonic stem cells is the way to go.
If we're going to go towards more responsible spending of tax dollars, ignoring embryonic stem cells is the way to go.

The fundamental problem with embryonic stem cells is that they haven't "fixed" themselves as to what they want to be - including being stem cells. Research keeps showing promise in what could be done with them but attempts to turn initial research into treatments falls apart because the embryonic stem cells are unstable.

This is not a debate that Biden can win on the science. He can score points on the common understanding of the stem cell debate, but on the science he cannot win.

52. That's the debate Biden gave them - did he say "embryonic" or just
stem cell research?

McSame's camp flip-flopped on their position or intentionally mis-understood what he was saying just to appease the fundy base, many of whom have declared all stem cell research anathema because they don't like or understand the science behind any sort of research.

Let's look at this logically -

1. The recent choice of Palin as VP was to primarily to shore up one of the major remaining supports of the party of Reagan, which is the fundamentalist and/or the hard-core commercial - charismatic "Xtian church" base. I don't know the exact figures, but I suspect that this is a good third or more of the remaining Republican support. Despite what the media claims (disaffected Hillary voters or rabid feminists, riiiight...), Palin's core principals are lockstep to those of the so-called conservative "Xtian" right. McSame's core principals are much more pragmatic - these are in lockstep with the "I got mine" Neo-Con/Neo-Liberal corporatist crowd who loves to schmooze and show off their power. Unfortunately, they aren't as in great numbers as they used to be, especially with de-regulation in the process of de-railing the economic train. Denial can only keep you hooked up onto that train so long...

2. Most of the members of the commercialized Xtian base had been seriously dissatisfied with the economic feudalist base and their constant promises of enacting radical social conservative policies, and had, prior to Palin's appointment, promised to stay home unless they got a sample of the red meat they craved.

4. These members and their commercial churches usually takes the position that "what Ghod gives you is what you are to bear for the rest of your life" - unless, of course, "He has blessed" you with enough prosperity to afford the heathen comforts of modern science. Doesn't matter how impractical it is due to the technological advances of this day and age, Stem Cell research, whether or not it has anything to do with embryonic tissue, is still basically on the level of abortion and witchcraft to them. It's "man trying to become god".

5. Even if the more science-minded or pragmatic of the Republican bases disagree, to be able to have a chance to come close enough in votes so that the machinery of the electoral college can be tweaked with, the radical social conservatives have to be placated so that they will come out and vote. So -

Stem Cell research, no matter where the cells come from, has to be as demonized as abortion and homosexuality is. Because unless Ghod blesses you with enough power and money to be "special" enough that you will be forgiven any supposed sin, you can't have any choice to improve your lot.

I'd say, go ahead and have that debate on Stem Cell research. And make them use the term "embryonic", be anti-science, and trip themselves up in front of the less radical, more informed moderate electorate.

If they want to cling to the wing-nuts, pull off those "low information voters" who are turned off by wing-nuttery, and either encourage them to vote for Obama or stay at home.

Set it up so that the Republicans are either going to lose the support of their wing-nuts or their moderates.

Haele
