The last time we won a Presidential election, the corporate media wasn't as entrenched
I am not a Chicken Little, sky-is-falling Democrat. I know we can win this thing. What is going to make it tough is that not only do we have to fight McCain, we have to fight the Corporate Media.

In 1992 and 1996, we still had some semblance of journalism in this country, and Clinton won these elections. With the launch of Fox News in 1996, and its success as a voice for the right-wing, other networks began to ratchet up the rhetoric. It came to a head during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, and during the 2000 election. The smear merchants were in full attack mode. I blame the media in part for Gore's loss.

The network news and opinion shows are no longer about ratings. Donahue, the most successful show on MSNBC, was canceled in 2003 because it offered a balanced view. Back during the run up to the Iraq war, 'balanced' mean 2-3 Republicans and one liberal. If it was all about ratings, Scarborough would have been canceled a long time ago, and Tucker would not have been given so many chances.

The corporate barons have banished Keith Olbermann, the strongest Democratic voice on television, for the crucial weeks leading up to our November vote. Apparently, Ed Gillespie whined back in May about the coverage. Olbermann is the highest-rated MSNBC show, and I have high hopes for Rachel's show to help offer a balanced perspective.

The problem is the pervasive propaganda on the other network news shows and your local news channels. Having the internet as a news source helps a bit, but most people still get their news from TV. With the removal of Olbermann, and MSNBC's announcement that it will scale back on providing an alternative Fox Noise, any semblance of balance or an open dialogue seems to be fading.

Someone talk me off the ledge, please.

4. Hey, I know we can win. The fucking media is a travesty.
It makes me very angry.

2. Nor the vote theft.
But neither was anti-Bush rage. I think we're gonna take this one.

8. Generally, I do too. This MSNBC thing pissed me off.
Plus a gal I worked with repeated the Reverand Wright BS to me today, and I wanted to scream. She's under 30, makes no money, and doesn't like either candidate. I told her to watch Olbermann because he's the only sane voice on TV today (along with Rachel).

9. We have the people, and we still have the Internet and the bloggers.
I hope that will be enough to counter the M$M.

10. The irony, of course, is that *Clinton signed the law* allowing the media consolidation...
I wonder if he regrets it?

11. The Media Is Out of Control
there's no doubt, it's sickening! I just gotta think this time we are out registering them and it will not be stolen - the kids will come out, the AA and Hispanic communities will be out in numbers like never before.

volunteer, volunteer, volunteer.

I'm finding that the old folks are weary and more apt to listen to reason when you discuss the differences between the two parties. The GOP is not on the side of senior citizens, unless they are rich.

12. Pretty much the point which "made" Faux ...
was when Rupert Murdoch blew a wad of money on a guaranteed moneymaker ... the rights to broadcast NFL games ...

That's the point where Faux became a "player" ... until then, they basically had "Married with Children", "The Simpsons", and a host of losing shows ...

and the media went all to hell after that ...

14. I think the internet will become more important though
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 04:56 PM by 4themind
especially as there is more intergration of internet T.V. and upgrading of line speeds. So while the T.V. media is more pervassive and biased, there are ,and will continue to be more alternate sources of information. The new problem becomes how to filter the good stuff from the bullsh** and getting people to take more initiative in doing
