9. I guess we could include Ulysses S. Grant
In terms of experience. Although, as far as successful Presidencies are concerned, maybe that's not the best example....

11. Yes.
I think his populism in being against the Bank of the United States is overshadowed by the fact that he was a bloodthirsty, genocidal barbarian.

12. I think the list should be restricted to only the greats.
It makes a much better point, after all.

Also, the corrollary: which highly experienced executives were complete washouts? A: McKinley for one.

14. About highly experience executives as washouts.
Well, you've got to include George H.W. Bush. Here was a man who supposedly had a impressive resume...and well, we saw how that turned out.

6. Rosevelt was asst. Secretary of the Navy before being Governor of the largest state.
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 04:13 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
(New York was the largest back then.)

Depending on how you slice it, Agnew was a joke, but a governor. Wilson was a short-time governor, but a university president.

It all depends on what value one gives "executive experience."

7. the one President that best compares experience-wise...
...is Abraham Lincoln. Eight years in the Illinois Legislature, two years in the US congress. Pretty close, if you ask me.

16. no, he wasn't an empty shirt.
He was an empty SUIT. George H.W. Bush was a stuffed shirt, on the other hand.
