Former Vice President Al Gore is returning to the first-in-the-nation caucus state next month with an appearance at a major Iowa Democratic Party fundraiser.

Gore, the 2000 Democratic presidential candidate, is making his first trip to the Hawkeye State since he won the Nobel Peace Prize and authored An Inconvenient Truth, according to a release. He is scheduled to address the Jefferson Jackson dinner on Oct. 4.

The former vice president was most recently was seen giving a warm-up speech to more than 70,000 people ahead of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's acceptance speech on the final night of the party's convention.

“We are deeply honored that former Vice President Al Gore, our nation’s leading voice on combating the global climate crisis and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, will be the keynote speaker at our Jefferson Jackson Dinner,” said Scott Brennan, chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party. “I join Gov. Chet Culver and Sen. Tom Harkin in expressing gratitude to former Vice President Gore for accepting the invitation to speak at what will be our biggest event of the year. We are excited to welcome him back to Iowa.”

Democrats are hoping to put Iowa, a red state in 2000 and 2004, into the blue column this year.

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) was announced over the weekend as the keynote speaker at Harkin's annual steak-fry, Iowa's other big political event outside of the presidential caucuses.
