Coming to an Election near You!
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 05:11 PM by FrenchieCat
Folks, let's talk! :grouphug:

There are many Democrats supporting Barack Obama who are afraid that the reason Barack is tied with McCain is because Obama is Black. That's a plausible analysis on its face......

but, I am offering an alternative theory.

As will all know, McCain is a war hero, a man advanced in years who has been in DC for a long time. A man who has switched positions more often than you turn your lights on at home. A man who gives off warmongering vibes, and not that much intellectual intelligence. Appears to speak in platitudes without sharing much in the way of details. He's picked a running mate who is a symbol really, but one that (according to most current polls) a majority of Americans agrees would be a roll of the dice and a possible nightmare if something were to happen the Mr. McCain.

In the meantime, voters see an Obama an intelligent, forceful, thoughtful leader. Someone who appears in the know on issues of technology and innovation. Someone who had enough insight to oppose Iraq. A man with a lovely family and himself a charismatic individual with losta of personal authentic appeal. He picked a running mate who is experienced, sharp and healthy. Someone who knows just about more than anyone about a whole lot of things. Obama might be a tax and spend liberal, but He hasn't really proposed anything by FDR/JFK type of programs. Someone who would certainly be a change. But he's Black.

What the country generally aknowledges-
The Economy is down the toilet.
The World doesn't care for us very much.
The Iraq war seems to eat up a lot of our money.
Times are not very good.

What Americans can agree that we need-
Our economy needs to improve
Our relationship with the world needs to improve
The Iraq War was the wrong war
We still haven't caught Bin Laden

So what is going to be on the minds of the majority of voters on election day?

McCain is old and and is not appealing as someone to have to watch on TV and listen to for 4 years.
Palin is inexperienced and a religious extremist like Bush, but she's cute and fiesty
Obama is better on the economic issues, and he seems to have programs that sound innovating;Fresh thinking.
Obama is liked by more leaders and people outside of the US
Biden is experienced and healthy
McCain doesn't have any original ideas, and he's a Republican
Obama may be Black, but he's only 1/2 Black, and when you add Biden, the ticket is 1/4 Black
The economy was better under Clinton, and Clinton is a Democrat.
The economy was terrible under George Bush, and Bush is a Republican.
Palin has so many kids, she doesn't know what to do; evidenced by her 17 year old daughter.
McCain/Palin is anti-choice
Obama/Biden is pro-choice
McCain was a POW
Obama pulled himself from his bootstraps
McCain could die in office
Obama is energetic and innovative, and this is the 21st century.
Obama will give me a tax cut and some health care
McCain will give corporations and tax cut and my life will stay the same.

Soooo......it comes to reason that the "undecideds" or "not really sure" White people who have been following the election enough to know that McCain is a war hero/POW, and might not consider publicly supporting the young Black guy with the funny name who really hasn't much suffered in his life compare to that old White guy will then say to themselves.....that Obama guy may not have paid is dues, but McCain life story is not really my business.

So what they hell, they'll think, after shrugging their shoulders in the voting booth, mulling it over just one more time, they'll figure......no one needs to know....but boy, voting for Obama is really gonna shake things up if he wins.

Voter then fill in the ballot for the Obama/Biden Ticket......

That is why we have to stick to the issues in dealing with this election, because that is how Obama will win. Just remember that when you want to discuss Palin and her personal scandals.....

This election will be won on the issues, but lost if personalities prevail.

3. I like the way you think.
It is definitely a possibility--and the thought does make me smile!

Realistically--I am just keeping my fingers crossed. But I like thinking positive!

4. Certainly, there will be that 20% that will not think at all, and vote
McCain. But They would vote for Bush if he was on the ballot again. There are the ones that think that Obama is a secret Muslim or the anti-christ and shit....

But, I'm thinking of the Average person...which is who we need to have these average thoughts that I have lined up.

5. I hadn't considered that

but you just might be on to something here. There are a lot of people out there that just don't get into politics and are just now getting around to thinking about the upcoming election. Many here at DU would be quick to call them racist because they really don't know what to make of the situation.

They don't follow politics so they don't know Obama. They're a bit hesitant about voting for a black man because it's not been done before, and most people fear what they don't know. Even if they've gotten past the Muslim rumors, the tax lies, and all the other crap they've received by email and know it's debunked, they very well might be thinking about voting for him but be afraid to say so publicly. As a society we have been well trained in fear, that's a fact.

But almost everyone agrees that things are very bad and we desperately need a change. And I think you may be right about that being alone in the voting booth. I only disagree on one small matter ... I think that if they've actually listened to him ... not just news stories about him, but listened to the man himself ... then we win even if they vote personalities. Truly it should be no contest.

Thanks for helping me to look at it sideways ;)

6. I think folks will watch the debates.....
BY the time November rolls around, they'll know a few things about both sides.......

And it wouldn't take much really....

7. Very good summation
I think, when all is said and done on November 4th, people will see the situation in the country today...worry about the economy. A war in Iraq that is very unpopular and, in spite of token withdrawls of troops by Bush, a situation that is still putting thousands of servicemen and women in harm's way. People will decide that these past 8 years have been ones of incompetence, of amorality, of a disdain towards the middle class and working poor, of a contempt for the Constitution and civil liberties. And they will see, as Barack Obama and Joe Biden have forcefully, consistently pointed out, John McCain and Sarah Palin are just more of the same. It will indeed be a third Bush term if John McCain and Sarah Palin are elected. And that Obama/Biden offers some hope. I genuinely think people are tired of fear and despair.

And those voters will reject the meanness, the culture wars, of McCain/Palin.
