Why does the GOP want to associate McCain with wrinkled dried out raisins?

Complements of Colbert and GOP Raisin McCain signs (I guess some of the GOP supporters can't spell). Why does the GOP want to associate McCain with wrinkled dried out raisins?

1. Didn't some country singer write a song for the the RNC called "Raisin' McCain"?

I assumed it was meant to be a play on Raising Cain, but since it's country, you can'g pronounce the "g."

(I believe that it is the only song whose writer hasn't asked McCain to cease and desist.)

except the GOP is spelling it Raisin as in California raisins....
