NBC's First Read: Planned Parenthood Fires Back at McCain in New Ad
From NBC's Mark Murray

Planned Parenthood, which has endorsed Obama, will begin airing today an aggressive new TV ad to counter the McCain campaign's earlier sex-ed hit on Obama, which charged that the Illinois senator's sole accomplishment in education was legislation teaching "'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners."

The Planned Parenthood advertisement fires back, asking if McCain is "just another politician who'll say anything to get elected."

"Every eight minutes a child is sexually abused. That’s why Barack Obama supported legislation to teach children how to protect themselves," a female narrator says in it. "Now John McCain is twisting the facts and attacking Sen. Obama. Doesn’t McCain want our children to protect themselves from sex offenders? Or after 26 years in Washington is he just another politician who’ll say anything to get elected?"

Planned Parenthood spokesman Tait Sye justifies the response ad, saying: "It was important to set the record straight. clearly distorts both Obama's record and the bill."

Indeed, non-partisan fact-checkers have criticized the McCain ad, noting that the legislation didn't teach the birds and bees to kindergartners -- instead it taught "age-appropriate" sex education to help warn children about inappropriate touching and sexual predators. Moreover, although Obama voted for this legislation, he didn't sponsor it and it didn't pass, as the ad implies.

4. They should release a new ad blasing McCain every day!
My concern is that we need to be much more brutal if we want to win. This ad looks like a good start! Hope Obama is paying attention!

19. Screaming on a message board is doing what? NOTHING!
I mean - really - it's doing nothing. Send emails to the campaign. Volunteer. Donate.

Please get your message to the campaign if you feel strongly. But screaming at everyone who doesn't want to hear incessant negativity is doing NOTHING.

If the entire board agreed with you 1000%, what would that change? NOTHING.

21. I'm sorry,
did you just say "Fuck you" to me? Why don't you do something productive like volunteer with the Obama campaign or better yet, get a job with them so you can influence the message. Screaming at a stranger on a message board can't be good for your blood pressure.

It punches McCain with the Truth and with emotion. Who doesn't want to protect their kids from sex predators?

7. Best part of it
Isn't the attack on McCain's sex ed stance, but labelling him as a Washington insider. Discredit his "maverick" title, and he literally has nothing.

16. I worked for a child abuse prevention program
I don't know if this is the program that Barack Obama was supporting. But it sure sounds like it could have been.

In 1999-2000 I presented assault prevention programs at public schools in Maryland. The local program I worked with is called MCAP (Metropolitan Center for Assault Prevention). It is affiliated with a wonderful program that originally began in New Jersey as CAP. Now that it has spread to other countries, the name was changed to ICAP - the International Center for Assault Prevention.

http://www.internationalcap.org/home_aboutcap.html

From the ICAP website:

"Since its inception in 1985, ICAP has trained over 5 million children, parents and teachers to prevent peer assault, stranger abduction and known adult assault. CAP seeks to integrate the best resources of a community in an effort to reduce a child or young person's vulnerability to verbal, physical and sexual assault."

I first encountered it when my older daughter was a first-grader in New Jersey. The CAP program was mandatory for all students in the state at that time (1989), but I don't know if it still is. When a CAP program was started in Maryland, I joined, got training and worked for them for a year.

There is nothing sexual about it. It is not sex education. The program is about teaching kids that they have the right to say no, to speak up, and to tell a trusted adult if someone is bullying them or abusing them. This includes learning about touching that makes them feel uncomfortable, nothing more. CAP is offered to kids as young as preschoolers, because abuse can start when a child is very young.

You would be amazed at how many kids come to the workshop presenters during the one-on-one chat sessions afterward to disclose that they are being abused. The presenters are trained to talk with kids and to report abuse to a local child protective services agency.

18. This is what we need. Call them accountable for what they say and do.
This is just busting McCain for what he's just done.

Question: How likely is it that McCain is an abuser? How likely is it that someone in the Palin clan is?

28. Is McCain an abuser? Most likely verbally & emotionally towards his wife.
Is there a chance that a Palin is an abuser? All I'll say is that Alaska leads the nation in cases of rape and incest. Kind of scary when you consider that it's the 47th most populous state.

20. A line from Obama today
(saw clip and wish someone would run it again---wishful thinking!) Anyway, he was addressing a union and he had "on" a very angry voice when he talked about all the trade agreements that have lost us so many jobs. He referred to McCain's "Country First" slogan and asked "which country"?? THAT needs to be an ad because those two words make all workers, but particularly, blue collar workers fighting mad!

They aren't a take-no-prisoners bunch, and this is probably more respectful than it has to be, but I think it's plenty effective.

29. Why does McCain want your children to be sexually abused?
Good ad.
And "they should learn that in the home" stuff doesn't apply here. Most sexual abuse of children happens in the home and is done by a family member.
