Alaska under Sarah Palin has the highest rape rate of any state
John Aravosis (DC) · 9/12/2008 12:47:00 PM ET

But please don't talk about it because winning is mean. The dark purple line is the number of rapes per capita for the top states. Sarah Palin's Alaskan Miracle is number one:

Forcible rape rate and Violent crime by State

2. When you're charging for rape kits, it only makes sense
to encourage more rapes. :eyes:

10. I think the rape kit thing was strictly Wasilla, and that the law was
on the books when Palin came on board. They are a small town, but would be interested in knowing if she attempted to change that law when she became Mayor.

Also, I actually don't think men are raping women more because a woman became governor, but then again, perhaps that would make men mad enough to go on raping rages. Just goes to show ya, women should stay home, cooking and getting pregnant.

There is a lot to criticize Palin for, but fact checking would be nice before accusations fly.

13. You're right, although I don't think I've pointed to any facts,
but rather made a sarcastic comment.

16. This thread indicates that Palin
was aware of the situation and, indeed, was mayor at the time it was instituted:

17. No, the law wasn't on the books when Palin came on board
It was Palin who signed it into Wasilla town law at the bequest of her own hand-picked chief-of-police:

Palin, as mayor, fired police chief Irl Stambaugh and replaced him with Charlie Fannon, who with Palin's knowledge, slashed the budget for the exams and began charging the city's victims of sexual assault. The city budget documents demonstrate Palin read and signed off on the new budget. A year later, alarmed Alaska lawmakers passed legislation outlawing the practice.

3. Unbelievably, I had someone at another website break an oath never to vote for McCain
because of this kind of information. He called it a smear. Imagine that! Pointing out that Sarah Palin charged rape victims for their rape kits persuaded this person to vote for McCain. His logic? Well, it was only five people during Palin's time as mayor!!!

Unbelievable. McCain's getting the "protect the rapist" vote.

4. Based on the numbers I've seen, it was WAY more than five people.
And that's disturbing all on its own.

7. Maybe it's the ratio of two single men to every single woman there.

I don't know if it would be a factor. Psychologists would have to weigh in on it. I do know that the first time I went with a friend to Alaska, I was in my twenties, and my friend and I were treated like movie stars by the young single men, who actually followed us around competing with each other for our attention. I think back then the ratio was five men to every woman. One guy even took me to coffee and proposed to me. However, no one tried to force themselves on either me or my friend.

12. This is something you can't blame Sarah Palin for
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 12:57 PM by ellacott
Rapes haven't spiked since she's been Govenor. They've always had high rape rates. It would blow up big time if we tried to put this on Palin

14. bet she's happy to take credit for anything positive that happened
after 2006! Just like Reagan took credit for the economic upswing due to Carter's policies, and Bush likes to blame Clinton for the 2001 dotcom crash. It if's good, I did it. If it isn't, it's my predecessor's failed policies.

I think it is fair, though, to ask what measures she put in place, or even considered, to address the problem. If she thought it was a problem.

15. That part is fair
But please don't try and blame her for the high rape numbers. It's not considerate to the history and victims of all the previous years. To me it's like you're trying to say that the prior years don't matter but now that we are in a political contest I'll bring it up.

I wish people would have been concerned about the high rape rate prior to this election.
