Sarah Palin and Princess Diana

From the first, the crowd reaction to the McCain-Palin duo reminded me of Charles and Diana.

Even though Prince Charles was the one who was descended from William the Conqueror and all the rest, even though he was the future king regnant, she was the one who drew the crowds -- a fresh new figure on the royal scene, young, pretty and personable.

When the royal couple arrived for a ''walkabout'' in some town and split up the street -- Charles heading to one side, Diana to the other -- people on Charles' side of the street would groan audibly: they had wanted HER and got stuck with HIM. A quarter-century on, Sarah Palin, the number-two on the ticket, is drawing larger crowds in her outings with presidential nominee John McCain than McCain ever has alone.

And now, with Palin's interview with Charles Gibson, some parallels are even more striking.

Palin told Gibson that she didn't hesitate when McCain popped the political question. ``I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate."

Flashback to Diana and Charles, describing their popping-the-question-moment to Time magazine: Charles said he proposed before Diana went off to Australia, in order to give her ''a chance to think about it -- to think if it was going to be too awful. If she didn't like the idea, she could say she didn't.'' But Diana interrupted ``Yes, quite promptly. I never had any doubts about it.''

Diana's youth and inexperience, everyone believed, made her perfect for the job -- she could be molded to grow into it. The more Diana revealed about her personal problems -- the bulimia, the shopping mania, even the affairs -- the more, paradoxically, her admirers fervently proclaimed their love and her fitness for the job.

Palin, a quarter-century older than Diana was when she said ''yes'' to Charles, likewise has admirers who proclaim that her very inexperience makes her politically unspoiled and great for the vice presidency, who say that her personal and family problems make them love her all the more.

We all know how the Charles-Diana pairing turned out.

The old saying goes, ``Marry in haste, repent at leisure.'' Will the new saying go, ''Vote in haste, repent at leisure''?

1. Except that Diana learned
to get a life in the end. She was helping with the Red Cross and Land mines. And who knows what she would have turned into ultimately.

Sarah Palin, by contrast, seeks a political POV that allows her to remain vapid.

2. Interesting comparison. As I recall, Diana was not allowed to
speak in public for quite a while, presumably because she was being 'tutored' about royal behavior.

3. I know you are only making a point however it's disturbing to see these two names mentioned together
Sarah Palin wish she had the grace and class Diana displayed.

closely. Paul Burrell's book said she planned to move to America and knowing how good hearted Diana was she would of fully endorsed Obama's message.

5. The comparision is kind of scary as the media became Diana's biggest nightmare in the end.

6. I don't like the comparison.
I can see the points, but Diana was a sweet naive and caring young woman, who was just sweet and naive enough to believe that she was actually loved by Prince Charles instead of being callously used by him as was the case. In spite of her heartbreak and disappointment she used her position to bring about some good. Palin, on the other hand, is neither sweet nor naive. While one could argue that she is being used, I see her as someone who is using just as much. She's in it for herself, and doesn't care who gets lost in the ensuing rumble.

Of course Diana was far from perfect, but I have a very soft spot in my heart for her and her sons...
