Side stepping caging lists.
Everyone is concerned about caging lists and the ability of foreclosed persons to vote... (6.5 million possibly more.)
I just read an article about keeping this from happening.

http://headonradionetwork.com/blog/2008/08/13/how-to-get-around-caging-lists-opinion/

it occurs to me we at DU have a responsibility to help these people to vote while politely asking them to vote democratic.
(keep the republicans from stealing another one...)

I have just posted on Craigslist how to check and to get registered here in Colorado

Don't let the fascists keep you from voting! check here to see if they have removed you or anyone else you know from the voter rolls.

http://www.sos.state.co.us/Voter/voterHome.do

then go here to retrieve a new voter registration form...

http://www.elections.colorado.gov/WWW/default/Clerks%20Corner/SOS%20Approved%20Forms/2007_forms/2007_voter_registration_english_fillable.pdf

and to be sure your vote counts go here to request a mail in ballot...

http://www.elections.colorado.gov/admin/LogReportingManagement/LinkClick.aspx?table=Links&field=ItemID&id=2489&link=Clerks+Corner%2fSOS+Approved+Forms%2f2007_forms%2fapproved_mail-in_ballot_application_color_7_11_07.pdf

It can be found at
http://denver.craigslist.org/rnr/838275249.html

I obtained Colorado's info from the Colorado (state) Democratic party's website...
http://www.coloradodems.org/

Now it seems to me if everyone from all states researched where to obtain this information and post to graigslist and or other ways of distribution. (And keep reposting) If you could please post that info for your state here as reply's we could build a quick DU reference to aid in helping all to vote.

Please recommend as this is damn Important...

2. This is great! Will Moveon or Common Cause or Obama
Be spearheading a drive to make sure everyone is still registered? Seems like the logical groups. How many states are online like Colorado? They could just check Dems on their list. But as I recall the caging in '04 was not de-registration only. It involved sending letters to addresses and claiming any returned ones were invalid or claiming somebody was a felon and caging them that way.

I don't know how you prevent that.

6. i do not know
However if everyone looked up their own state we could get this going as time is running out. insofar as felons check your name anyway and see.. remember in FLA 2000 and 2004 voters were purged because their names were LIKE felons...
as they were not felons yet they were still not allowed to vote.

11. Thank you I hope to accumulate a list
of all 50 states to post later and all over the net... this is pressing as i read every day how the GOP is trying to keep people whom their economy has run over to not get a chance to complain at the ballot box.

22. From what I gather, as long as they're still living at the address...
...they remain eligible to vote. It takes a while to actually kick someone out of their house, so hopefully these unfortunate people will go vote these bastards out.

30. At the least, I would think...
Most of these banks don't want to take over the properties, because then they're responsible for the taxes, upkeep, etc. With the current slowdown in home purchasing, lenders are more likely to try to make deals with the delinquent homeowners rather than repossessing houses they can't resell.

31. Now that that's done, some observations...
Some state websites were more helpful than others, and some made it almost difficult to maneuver around to get information. I found the great majority of these sites offered all of the following:

1. How to see if you are registered.
2. How to register, including qualifications, forms, deadlines, etc.
3. How to locate your polling place.

There were a few that referred the voter to their county boards of elections for some info, particularly polling places.

A really good all-around site (already mentioned upthread) is provided by the League of Women Voters. Pretty much anything a voter (or potential voter) needs to know can be found here:
