to is really awful.

On the side where mom's address is, it says (in big letters) VOTER ALERT! On the other side, there is a picture of McCain and it says "A faith that sustains me...."

Then on the inside (get your stomach distress bags ready)

You can vote by mail to join John McCain in protecting our values

As a POW in Vietnam, I suffered years of torture and humiliation at the hands of my captors.

But even on my lowest days in that dark place, a place seemingly void of even the slightest glimmer of human decency, I was lifted up by a shining light from above. My faith in God sustained me, protected me and gave me the strength to endure.

And my faith during those days reinforced my respect for human dignity, human rights and the value of the human life.

That's why I have consistently fought to defend the right to life and the rights of the unborn.

That's why Cindy and I have worked to promote adoption here and around the world as an alternative to abortion, including adopting our own daughter from Mother Theresa's orphanage in Bangladesh.

And that's why I will appoint judges that respect the values and protect the rights established in our Constitution, faithfully applying the law without legislating from the bench.

I would be honored to have your support. May God bless you and your family.

As you can imagine, we were shocked to learn he had been a POW (really, if Biden dared, he could now say about McCain, "a noun, a verb, and POW").

Several years ago Muzz told some pollster that she was prolife and since then she gets all sorts of trashy literature - or maybe his campaign got hold of a parish list (is that legal?) we're guessing that's why she received this. The Old One was not impressed by it and did remark "He must really think people are stupid."

Minnesota has same day registration so this doesn't look like a fraud attempt and I verified that the address the voter should send the form to is the correct one for the county clerk. But I'm wondering if McCain thinks Minnesota is in play. He's running ads here constantly and I have yet to see an Obama ad.

1. Sickening. My elderly mother received something from McCain
and something from the RNC. She was holding onto the letters because in big letters on the envelope it said: DO NOT DISCARD/REPLY WITHIN SEVEN DAYS

She's a lifelong Democrat. My Dad died 4 years ago and she lives alone. I only see her about twice per month. I have no idea what else she might have received and sent in.

10. They are using those letters to try to purge people from
the rolls based on mail that comes returned to sender. What is even worse is that they are preying on older people who may not have the resources or help to know what to do.

2. McCain's being a POW would make me less likely to vote for him.
I don't understand why anyone thinks this is an asset. "He was tortured for years and totally screwed up by a war that most of those in it have never gotten over. Hey, what a great president he would be!"

I just don't get it.

On the other hand, when I was a kid there was a man who was elected mayor in my town because he had a brain tumor and people felt sorry for him. That made no sense to me either. He loss most of his cognitive capacity about 1/2 way through his term. Go figure.

6. Oh, is my face red.
I couldn't find an electionic copy of this and had to type it into the post myself. I do know the difference between "here" and "hear" - but I have to admit when I'm typing too quickly my fingers seem to seek out the easiest way to type something.

7. also..
"Bet even on my lowest days" Bet? If this came out of their campaign, yikes !

I don't think Biden will go there, but I'd sure love to see a whole bunch of Vets call him out on the POW card. Every military person I've ever known has been extremely humble about their service. He really shames the dignity of the uniform by using his captivity as a political tool and demeans real heroes who actually put their lives on the line. It's really gotten to be pretty shameless and should insult every veteran.

9. Another typo by me.
I wish spell check would tell you when the word is spelled correctly but makes no sense where you've put it. (Or I wish I was a better proof reader).

11. This isn't a ballot, but a request to have an absentee ballot sent to you.
As I said, the return address on the ballot form is addressed correctly and you can apply for an absentee ballot by mail in Minnesota so I think this is legal. My mother does vote absentee because her arthritis makes it difficult for her to stand for long times, but I take her over to City Hall a couple weeks before the election where she fills out her absentee ballot request and votes there all in one stop. She doesn't do any of it by mail.

5. Is your mom a Republican or is she one of the Obama supporters being targeted?
Did you see the other posts about the McCain campaign sending out faulty absentee ballot applications?

If that's what it is it would be interesting if you can scan it or take a pic of it and post it. Also contact the SoS office.

8. Mom is and always has been a Democrat
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 09:11 PM by dflprincess
Several years ago she did tell a pollster that she was "pro-life" and she's gotton all sorts of trashy Republican mail since then. We figure that's why she got this. (She actually does not fit the wing nut definition of pro-life as she does believe abortion should be legal in cases of rape, incest and when the mother's health is at stake and she thinks the morning after pill makes sense. She's just not so sure about it when the reason is fetal anomolies or when someone just "got careless" (her words). And she has never based her vote on a candidate's abortion position.)

She's also donated to the DFL so she should be getting more mailings from Democrats.

15. Hm... take a close look at that absentee ballot app and see if the address
of where to mail it is correct or if there is a check box for stating that you are legally allowed to vote.

Check out these threads regarding the McCain campaign scams going on regarding that:

13. So did my mom; a diehard yellow dog--and DECEASED for 3 years.
No, I'm not kidding; my sister lives in our parent's house with a companion and yes, a Mccain vote by mail application was received at that address addressed to my mom.

Sis didn't think much of it and only mentioned it in passing, but damn--I smelled a rat.

Something is very disturbingly crooked here.

14. They might have gotton a list of people who voted in the 2004 election
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 09:58 PM by dflprincess
which makes them more likely to vote in another presidential race. They could be cross matching them to other lists so they can make a better guess at what type of tripe to send the voter.

Minnesota doesn't have party registration so they can't target Democrats just through the voter lists - they have to find another way to identify DFLers.

16. McCain wasn't tortured. According to him and chimpy and the Repukes
everything that happened to McCain is just fine and dandy. We're doing the same to our prisoners and it's all ok, according to them.

So McCain can just shut up about being tortured because he wasn't, according to his own votes in Congress.
