Animal lovers will defeat Palin.....
Animal lovers cross all political demographics and income groups. The powerful "wolf killing" ad put out by Defenders of Wildlife has gotten a huge response. We need a lot more adds like it. I'm making a big donation to DoW this weekend.

And yes, I did say "defeat Palin", because that's who we're running against now. Ignoring her would be deadly. Does anyone really think that tired old man McCain would be polling as high as he is without her?

2. There are LOTS of hunters in this country.
BTW I've been a vegetarian since I was 16, 26 years. I think there might be a stronger voting block in the animal hunters than the animal rights activists.

9. Many hunters don't consider aerial hunting to be really hunting,
any more than canned hunts. Others don't like hunting predators, because it throws nature out of balance. Yeah, some hunters just think animals were put here to be shot. But, between the more ethical hunters and animal lovers, this could hurt Caribou Barbie.

I know a lot of hunters who hunt for food-but that is a very different thing from the sort of pure blood-lust or whatever that seems to motivate these psychos.

13. Yes, and remember this is not a left-right or Pro or anti-gun issue, it's a moral compass issue.
It's not "sport" to us a helicopter to chase down wolves until their exhausted, then kill them. Hunters who value "the sport" and eat the meat of their prey loathe sociopathic assholes who use this "shooting fish in a barrel" type tactic.

Most hunters don't hire guides to TAKE THEM to the game, they actually TRACK the game.

39. Yep - good article here
Climate change. Although Alaska is ground zero in the crisis of global warming, Palin has done virtually nothing to address the problem except hold meetings and appoint a "climate sub-cabinet" that likewise has done little. Lots of talk, no action. Although in the past two years the Arctic summer sea ice shrunk to the lowest levels ever recorded, Palin apparently does not believe it is human-induced or cause for alarm. She was asked to establish an Alaska Office on Climate Change, an Alaska Climate Response Fund (based on a tax on Alaska oil production) and emissions reduction targets for Alaska, but has taken no action on those requests.

Polar bears. This summer, Palin filed suit against the Bush administration over the federal listing of polar bears as threatened, saying that her opposition was based on a "comprehensive scientific review." But when asked to release the scientific review, she refused. The document, later obtained by the public (from the federal government), clearly shows that, contrary to Palin's assertions, the state of Alaska's marine mammal scientists agreed with the federal conclusions that the polar bears are in serious trouble because of global warming and loss of their sea ice habitat, and that they would be gone from Alaska by 2050. Palin clearly decided to oppose the listing in order to protect Arctic oil and gas development, then publicly misrepresented the basis for her decision, and then tried to conceal all of that. Having run for office on a platform of honesty and transparency, this behavior was neither. Her extreme position here puts her to the political right of the Bush /Cheney administration.

Endangered species. Earlier this year, Palin approved a $2 million state appropriation for a conference on the "economic impacts" of the Endangered Species Act, designed to persuade the public that ESA listings were too costly and unwarranted. Recently she agreed to use the money instead to fund the state's lawsuit against the Bush administration over the polar bear listing -- a likely violation of the state constitutional provisions on appropriation. She opposes additional species listings and other protections in Alaska, where many species are at risk because of climate change and other threats.

Predator control. Palin approved and expanded the state's aerial predator control program, where wolves are shot from aircraft and bears hunted from aircraft and killed upon landing. This year, her state biologists even dragged 14 newborn wolf pups from their den and, having already shot their parents, then shot each of the pups in the head at close range. Last year, her administration offered a $150 bounty for each wolf killed until the bounty was ruled illegal by the courts. Hundreds of wolves are killed each year by this antiquated state program that has no scientific justification whatsoever, but rather is designed to appease Palin's urban sport hunter supporters.

41. Salon Story on her Wolf Hunting program-good article to send around
Sept. 8, 2008 | Wildlife activists thought they had seen the worst in 2003 when Frank Murkowski, then the Republican governor of Alaska, signed a bill ramping up state programs to gun down wild wolves from airplanes, inviting average citizens to participate. Wolves, Murkowski believed, were clearly better than humans at killing elk and moose, and humans needed to even the playing field.

But that was before Sarah Palin took Murkowski's job at the end of 2006. She went one step, or paw, further. Palin didn't think Alaskans should be allowed to chase wolves from aircraft and shoot them -- they should be encouraged to do so. Palin's administration put a bounty on wolves' heads, or to be more precise, on their mitts.

In early 2007, Palin's administration approved an initiative to pay a $150 bounty to hunters who killed a wolf from an airplane in certain areas, hacked off the left foreleg, and brought in the appendage. Ruling that the Palin administration didn't have the authority to offer payments, a state judge quickly put a halt to them but not to the shooting of wolves from aircraft.

Detractors consider the airborne shootings a savage business, conducted under the euphemism "predator control." The airplanes appear in the winter, so the wolves show up like targets in a video game, sprinting across the white canvas below. Critics believe the practice violates the ethics of hunting, while supporters say the process is not hunting at all, but a deliberate cull.

Palin has argued that she is worried about Alaska's hunters, locked in perennial competition with the canine carnivores for the state's prodigious ungulate population. A hunter herself, Palin has battled critics of aerial wolf hunting with the support of the Alaska Outdoor Council, a powerhouse advocacy and lobbying organization for hunting, fishing and recreation groups. In addition to so-called urban hunters, who shoot moose mostly for fun, Alaska is home to a significant number of subsistence hunters, including some of the Native population. Subsistence hunters rely on an occasional moose to make ends meet. The wolves, Palin has said, are stealing food from their tables.

----

Gordon Haber is a wildlife scientist who has studied wolves in Alaska for 43 years. "On wildlife-related issues, whether it is polar bears or predator controls, she has shown no inclination to be objective," he says of Palin. "I cannot find credible scientific data to support their arguments," he adds about the state's rationale for gunning down wolves. "In most cases, there is evidence to the contrary."

Last year, 172 scientists signed a letter to Palin, expressing concern about the lack of science behind the state's wolf-killing operation. According to the scientists, state officials set population objectives for moose and caribou based on "unattainable, unsustainable historically high populations." As a result, the "inadequately designed predator control programs" threatened the long-term health of both the ungulate and wolf populations. The scientists concluded with a plea to Palin to consider the conservation of wolves and bears "on an equal basis with the goal of producing more ungulates for hunters."

44. I think the Defenders of Wildlife should cut the most graphic part
of their ad so it can be shown on television--people get the idea, watching the poor wolves run through the snow away from the plane, that they're about to be shot--the suggestion alone is powerful enough to make the point, no need to turn stomachs. Otherwise, I think the full ad is great for the web--just needs to be fine-tuned for TV. I don't know if they have the budget to air it, though.

45. It's not hunting to shoot and kill an animal aerially
just to watch the poor creature die a slow, torturous death.

OTOH, it's understandable to shoot a tranquilizer dart into a sick yet dangerous animal by air for the sole purpose to subdue the reluctant animal and get him or her the life-saving veteranary treatment it needs. That should the only reason for aerial shootings--non-lethal and so as not to risk your own life to save an animal.

This is not true in the case of the Attila from Wasilla; she just enjoys watching helpless creatures suffer, be they on two legs or four.
