What Sarah Palin doesn't tell you about gas taxes
Gov. Sarah PalinGov. Sarah PalinSure, Republian VP nominee Sarah Palin deserves some credit for suspending Alaska's 8-cent per gallon gas tax and giving some of that revenue back to taxpayers in the form of a $1,200 energy rebate.

But how much did it really do for what Alaskans pay at the pump? Not much, according to the recent gas prices compiled by AAA. Alaskans still have the highest gas prices in the country, paying an average of $4.39 a gallon.

At that rate, this blogger -- who lives in Kansas where the state gas tax is 24 cents a gallon -- would pay about $2,300 a year to fill up his beat up '97 Honda Civic in Alaska. I would still be running a $1,000 deficit even if I did get the $1,200 rebate.
