You know, John McCain didn't say "no" when Whoopi asked about a return to slavery.
It occurred to me after watching the clip -- McCain did not say "no" when Whoopi specifically asked him whether (because of his views on who should be appointed to the Supreme Court) she should be worried about being returned to slavery. When he did murmur "no," it was to her question on whether he wants strict Constitutionalists to sit on the bench.... something that could be seen as a different question he's answering.

GOLDBERG: Can you just, and I don’t want to misinterpret what you’re saying. Did you say you wanted strict Constitutionalists? Because that, that-

McCAIN: No, I want people who interpret the Constitution of the United States the way our founding fathers envision-

GOLDBERG: Does that-

McCAIN: -for them to do.

GOLDBERG: Should I be worried about being a slave, about being returned to slavery because certain things happened in the Constitution that you had to change.

McCAIN: I, I understand your point.

GOLDBERG: Okay, okay.

McCAIN: I understand that point and I, I, thank you. That’s an excellent point.

GOLDBERG: Thank you sir.

McCAIN: And I thank you.

Check out the exchange again, it's near the end of this clip:
McCain on Roe vs. Wade and Slavery

Even if Whoopi was being facetious (which I'm not sure she was), that McCain couldn't?, didn't?, wouldn't? say "no," is interesting, to say the least.

2. For putting that wacko fundie on the ticket, our founding fathers would come back from the dead
... and throttle McCain senseless. What an absolute lying jackass. To think I once admired that jerk.

Y'know, you are right.

Interesting to say the least.

20. If someone had said that to me, I would have been very clear--"NO, of course not."
But he couldn't wait to get away from the question.

It was really a creepy moment in a very uncomfortable interview.

I was in college (HBCU in the 80s) when I became aware of mcsame. Till this day, I look at him and think, "You sorry old Bastard."

12. Went to the NACCP this year and apologized
for his vote.

Bet with the direction that his campaign is going now, he would say that he PROUDLY voted against it and connect it to earmarks or bureaucracy.

19. You know why he changed his mind? The tourism industry (crucial here in AZ).
We had massive boycotts and huge convention business pulled--nit to mention the Super Bowl possibility was yanked because of it.

It wasn't a moral decision oin his part; he just knew it was hurting his fat cat donors right where it stings most.

I'm a constituent for 25 years; his retirement cannot come soon enough.

21. You can always count on a GOP cockroach to be swayed by his wallet not his conscience.
All the while proclaiming his "moral superiority" to the rest of us.

Thanks for that info.

It worked resoundingly well!

I can see McCain asking his aids afterwards - "Can we do this? How would this poll?"

-- no doubt he'd get one of my African-American brothers or sisters who are always so "proud to be a Republican" to lobby for it.

15. dear friends...
slavery cost too much.

What is happening to the workers in America provides for a much higher profit margin.

I wouldn't put anything past the repugs. I'm sure many of them would love the idea of having free labor again. You would think he would have given a very clear answer on her question.....

13. His reply, coupled with the recent revelation (if true) that Palin does not hire African-Americans--
--really makes me wonder just what Republicans are really campaigning for in this election. The more I examine his reply to Whoopi, the stranger it seems!

However, it might through some light on his sense of social culture.

He couldn't even handle a casual sit down interview. How is he going to handle himself during the debates.

22. Just as badly, I hope. I loved the groans from "the View" audience.
And I think he even mistook applause for Whoopi as applause for himself -- he looked like someone's out-of-it grandpa trying to hang out with the young folk.

23. Actually - he looks like an idiot everywhere.
the only reason the Republican money guys suddenly started backing McCain is to get a sure loser on the ticket. I don't think they ever dreamed America would be stupid enough to make it a horse race.
