In direct contrast to Caribou Barbie, Who is the female role model
you would choose for your child or teen? I was thinking of this earlier. I will post mine later in the post.

1. Hilllary, for one.
And I'm not a Hillbot -- I've been for Obama all along.

2. In politics, Barbara Boxer. I knew her aunt when the senator was
just beginning her political career. The aunt told me about her, how she was going about gaining strength, what she believed, and that i should watch her because she would be "the real thing". She is. Now, if we want to talk science, or the arts, or social action, or just plain decency, my list will get longer.

But as far as real-people go that kids can relate to, nothing jumps out at me - male or female - and that's kinda sad.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I actually think this is a VERY interesting topic, and hope it doesn't get "lost in a blizzard of words"

Bookmarked, hopefully this thread will draw some interesting responses.

8. In politics I would put bio materials on Barbara Jordan and Bella Abzug
around the house, but for role models generally, would include Georgia O'Keeffe, Amelia Earhart, Aung San Suu Kyi, and a slew of the goddess pantheon figures.

That's an off-the-cuff list of models living and dead from a list that is a lot longer.

13. Lordy.... I hope your daughter has a better set of friends than..
Karl Rove, Donna's bud. (yes I do somewhat like Brazille still, but I will never fully trust her after hearing about her close relationship with this conniving criminal).

25. Ok... Barbara Jordan, Shirley Chisholm, Stephanie Tubbs Jones.
Michelle Obama-- even Oprah.... Do you really think there is such a dearth of incredible strong and consistently progressive black women? I do not.... Get some tapes of the late Barbara Jordan for your daughter or anyone's daughter! She was incredible.

She -- and they -- are amazing when you see them in action. Totally committed to real progressive populism, and ardent advocates for it -- while remaining real women.

17. Me!
I've always tried to be an excellent role model for my daughter. It would appear that she seems to get into as much trouble as I do, standing up for what she believes in.

Yeah, it's kind of arrogant, but honest.

As a child in the 60s I was inspired by her and, even more so, today. She is the polar opposite of Palin.

19. There are so many but
for contemporary politicians: Barbara Boxer and Hillary Clinton are right up there. For earlier ones: Barbara Jordan and Jeanette Rankin ( a Republican, incidentally). For earlier activists: Coretta Scott King, Dorothy Day, and Mother Jones. For contemporary activists: too many to name but how about Medea Benjamin as a stand-in.

20. My first thought was Susan
Sarandon. But, I didn't feel completely comfortable with choosing a "celebrity". After some research, there are so many to choose from. Grace Hopper was fabulous. She was a pioneer in the field of computer science, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I calculator, and she developed the first compiler for a computer programming language.

Then there is Maya Angelou, an American poet, memoirist, actress and an important figure in the American Civil Rights Movement. She overcame many difficult obstacles.

How could one forget the women of WWII. They sacrificed so much for America when sacrifice meant more than going shopping.

Also mentions include: Katherine Hepburn, Jane Goodall, Rosie O'Donnell, Rosalyn Carter, and don't laugh, Terri Irwin.

Thanks for everyone building on the list.

Our daughters need more great role models.
