WOW! FL Paper-Headline: "CAMPAIGN OF LIES DISGRACES MCCAIN"
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 10:01 AM by kpete

A Times Editorial
Campaign of lies disgraces McCain

This nation is facing real challenges on the economy, health care, jobs and the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are significant differences between how Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain would address them. But McCain's recent campaign ads suggest the most vital issues are whether Obama wanted to teach sex education to kindergarten children and whether he derided the Republican's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, by talking about lipstick on a pig.

McCain's straight talk has become a toxic mix of lies and double-speak. It is leaving a permanent stain on his reputation for integrity, and it is a short-term strategy that eventually will backfire with the very types of independent-thinking voters that were so attracted to him.

The sex education ad says that Obama supported "comprehensive sex education" for kindergarten children. Graphics then appear with a voice-over saying: "Learning about sex before learning to read?"

The facts: Obama, while a state lawmaker in Illinois, supported a measure to provide older students with age and developmentally appropriate sex education. Younger children, such as those kindergarten-age, would be taught "age-appropriate" things such as how to protect themselves from sexual predators. The legislation was widely backed by the state PTA and the Illinois Public Health Association. Parents could choose to opt out of any instruction for their children.

like most of Central Florida (South Florida is blue, North Florida is red).

The rest of us are a melting pot of nationalities and interests that just want to live our lives...

45. No, a large portion of South Florida is Red
Go into Miami-Dade, and it's a total different world from the rest of South Florida - well, the rest of anywhere, really. Cross over into Broward and the more north you go, the bluer and saner SoFlo seems to get.

Lived in and worked for the county more than 20 years, and knew, though not always understood, the politics fairly well. The Cubans have a good lock on the politics there, where dead men vote, and often; and where politicians shamelessly will list even a vacant lot as their home address, if that is the locality that they decide they want to run.

Fun place. Que?

26. This is true about the papers
and has been that way for 50+ years. For example the St Pete Times was largely pro-integration in the 50s and 60s while the Tribune was "neutral" on the subject.

34. The St. Pete Crimes has an identity problem.
It used to be a fairly progressive paper, but they took a decided rightward tilt about 3 years ago, when they changed editors. Their only redeeming quality anymore, is Robyn Blumners column on Sundays. They dropped Krugman and added Krauthammer a few years ago. I think Krugman is back now, but I refuse to buy their fish wrap anymore.

I have a problem with them smearing Democratic candidates in general.

42. The Tampa-St. Pete area covered by this Newspaper is huge...
It's a huge area, millions of people, made up of dozens and dozens of communities....it's just not the City of Tampa or St. Petersburg. This paper circulates all over central Florida, from Orlando to Tampa, and the coastal gulf areas of Florida from Naples all the way up to the Appalachicola Bay beach towns. Most importantly, the entire area is chock full of older, middle-class retirees, mostly from the mid-west....Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and so on....with lots and lots of ex-military, too. So, it's a good thing these folks are reading this.

Most of the support I'm seeing in west-central Florida for McCain is coming from older folks. Every time I see a McCain bumper sticker on a car I check to see who's driving. Nine times out of ten it's some old fart in a Town Car. Obama stickers outnumber McCain's by at least four to one most everywhere I go in Florida. And the one thing I'm not seeing here in Florida, something that I would see constantly before the 2000 and 2004 elections, are GOP stickers on working-class pick-up trucks and other trade-type vehicles. A few years ago most of these guys would have "W04" stickers on their trucks, this time I'm not seeing McCain stickers on these types of blue-collar vehicles. Maybe they figured out voting for Republicans is not in their best economic interest. I'm seeing a lot of support for Obama in Florida, but it's a pretty Republican-leaning state. It's constantly changing, though.

64. Old fart in a town car!!!!
Wait a minute, I drive all over St. Pete, as my daughter< and soon me> lives there. Whoever said that it is purple there is probably close to the truth. My daughter is true blue, my son-in law is old line West Palm Beach repub. He however says he can't vote for McSame. I think we've won him over to our side,as he is one of those sane repubs, that can admit to the truth. I believe Fla. will go blue this time. I lived in Miami for 7 years, still have friends there and I'm told Dade is trending blue, so keep the faith.

75. ummm...I have a different experience...
I have a few bumper stickers, and almost EVERY day since I've put them on my car, I've been receiving the middle finger and honks from other drivers- usually 1-3 per day (so far, exclusively guys have done this to me, and most have NObama, OBAMA/OSAMA, or McCain: Country First type stickers on their p.o.s. gas-guzzlers {rednecks in p/ups and Hummer drivers}). I have seen a few Obama stickers (more so in south Pinellas county)...but I feel that I am surrounded by repubs (although, I know that my county is slightly blue...by maybe a few thousand, doesn't feel that way to me). And yeah, I've seen a few 20mph driving seniors in towncars with McCain stickers ...but I've seen a lot more of the former. :puke:

36. Thanks for the great post.
This was one of the most dispicable of all the recent McCain attacks--the one where they tried to picture Obama as a sexual pervert when in fact the "sex" education for youngsters that was being advocated were "stranger-danger" programs to help children protect themselves agains predators. On my website I have a video posted from MSNBC that shows an interview where the Republicans got nailed for this. Also I found this particularly revolting considering the number of elected Republican officials who have been convicted of sexual crimes against children. (maybe that's why they were making such a stink over Obama trying to stop them) If you google republican and pedophile you will see what I mean.

59. The good part of this is the headline.
Believe me, that's about all most people will bother to read.

If it's in the headline, two things:

1) Forgive me - but "It's the headline, stupid." For the short-attention-span-theater set, who do indeed skim the headlines and then pronounce their newspaper officially read through. If they do NOTHING else, the message was in the headline - mcsame = LIAR. Very simple. Took about one-and-a-half seconds of their time. You can swallow up a headline in one glance, before your brain even processes the meaning. BANG! Message seen, message delivered. Strong simple words that quickly get in and get out, as we were taught in sparring class. Quick hits. Get in and get out. Message delivered. BOOM. Opponent doesn't even realize what's happened for another second or two. ADDED SWEETNESS: "Disgraces mcsame" - his name AND the word "disgraces" side by side. REALLY fast quick hit.

2) The headline will also draw attention because of the strength of the word "lies," paired with the word "disgraces" (and further fine-tuning via the word "campaign", places or affixes it in time and space (and ownership - mcsame is NAMED in here, too). Because of this, it will induce some people to stop and give the whole piece a few minutes of their time. You'd want to read the whole thing too, once you'd seen the headline. Even better if it catches the eye of an independent or wavering voter whose mind still isn't made up. They might either just absorb the bald-faced message in the headline or might be intrigued to read a little more about it.

What's also nice about this is it's in a mainstream paper. In print on SUNDAY. And it's already online as is.

He's a liar. Here's more proof. You STILL trust him? You STILL want to trust him with our White House? Didn't we already make that mistake - TWICE in the last eight years?

73. It's the headline, stupid!
Every morning I walk into the mini-mart on the way to work, pick up a cup of coffee and 2 newspapers (NY Times and Newark Star Ledger- I'm in Jersey). Standing in line, I see maybe 1 person in 5 picking up a newspaper- but everybody walks past the rack and can see the headlines.

If somebody has a newspaper sitting on their desk, most people walking by aren't going to stop and ask if they can read it- but they can read the headline.

The headline is a kind of billboard and functions independently from the content of the rest of the paper. And the headline's effect is more pervasive, reaching into the dim recesses of the minds of the hordes of low information voters who unwittingly control our mutual destiny. (Sorry, if that doesn't sound elitist, I'm not trying hard enough).

The same kind of thing happens with TV news spots plugging "an important story coming up." For every person who sticks around to see the important story, several surf off into the wasteland and are left with only the promo as a source of information...

61. It seems that they, along with other corporate owned news
can't keep up the facade any longer. Too many bloggers. Too much truth v. too many untruths. I still believe that martial law will happen in lieu of the elections.

74. Do the knuckle draggers read?
If not then this is worthless.

From what I know of them they get their news from Rush & Hannity.

Therein lies the problem.
