A friend just sent me an impassioned and beautifully written article by writer and performer Eve Ensler. Basically she tells us she thinks the McCain-Palin alliance is one of the most dangerous tickets of our time.
So do I.
I like that Ensler makes a point of explaining that her views about Palin have nothing to do with Palin being a woman. In fact, Ensler and I are in total agreement that the choice of Palin as a woman was made with calculated cynicism, lumping all women into a lock-step mentality as if I would ever vote for anyone just because she is a woman.
Let me say loud and clear…I resent being played this way. And I hope women across this country can separate the idea of women being equal choices for any office in this country, and not allowing the same devious minds who brought us Bush-Cheney (don’t be fooled by the new packaging) to try to sell us a woman rather than the right leader (of either gender) for these critical times.
Ensler says:
I don’t like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists.
Yup. They are counting on solidarity. But they forget one thing. Women have brains and, once we’ve had a chance to celebrate the historic nature of this campaign on many levels, I think we will DRILL down into the reality of what we’re being handed.
Beneath the surface of this team promising reform and a new beginning in Washington, we have the same old puppeteers controlling the strings and feeding words and strategy to McCain and Palin. These are the very same puppeteers who brought us these last disastrous years and left our country with a horrible mess to clean up. McCain-Palin tell us they are going to fix things, but yet they are being handled by the same people that helped get us to this point. I think, once you scratch below the surface, you will find little commitment to the kind of reform we really need and a good deal of the same-old dangerous minds at work.
While we all want Washington to change, we cannot let ourselves be suckered into four more years of war mentality and a dangerous trend toward decreased civil liberties and invasion into our privacy.
What the hands controlling the strings really want would make a good sequel to Orwell’s 1984. But they figure if they put enough lipstick on it, we’ll buy the pretty package they are so cleverly selling us.
My advice to everyone is to get beyond the lipstick and drill, drill drill for truth and the real motivation behind the McCain-Palin team. Below the surface, it’s not a pretty picture. In fact it’s scary and cynical. And our children’s future and that of our planet depend on all of us to see what’s truly lurking underneath.
Hint: What you’ll find down below is NOT anything close to solutions for our nation’s unbelievably serious economic, international, environmental, and energy problems. It’s something much more insidious.
At least that’s what I think. Me, just an average woman who likes to use my brain. Whether I have my lipstick on or not.
