Granted, it wasn't much.
But for those of you who haven't heard my parents story, my mother and father both passionately supported Hillary Clinton. Both are closet racists, but I think it has more to do with their up bringing and origins from a racist small town I was born in than it does personal beliefs. My father recently told me he was going to vote for Obama not as his first choice, but as the better of the two men. And he said after Bush, we couldn't afford more of the same--and even though he was skeptical how great the change will be, he says he does believe Obama will do much better than Bush.
My mother was just plain stubborn. She said she wasn't voting, wasn't getting involved. In 2004, my parents got involved with politics again for the first time since 15 years ago. They voted for John Kerry, and had Kerry/Edwards yard signs and bumper stickers. And they encouraged me to go volunteer as a young high schooler (then I was still in high school) not even quite old enough to vote just yet. I volunteered many hundred hours for Kerry. I would leave school, and go directly to the campaign office until it closed. While others focused on jobs and working for money, I spent my time in the campaign offices. During the weekends, and during the summer of 2004, while my friends went on trips--I volunteered. And my parents not only encouraged it, they were proud of me and my efforts.
In 2008, they backed Hillary. And my mother wasn't able to come around once Obama won the nomination, and she bought into ALL of the lies and smears being told about Obama. She thought he was a Muslim, that he wasn't patriotic, and bought into all the McCain lies. Until Governor Palin got on board. My mother, a strong women and passionate Hillary supporter, didn't like Palin AT ALL. So she started researching the issues, and go on board with Obama.
And she just called to tell me she donated to a campaign for the first time in life.
I cried like a baby. It's amazing watching your mother, who never graduated from college and always bought into the Republican talking points, research the issues and tell you she was wrong--and that Obama is right for the country.
The only reason my parents voted for Kerry in 2004 was because of the mess Bush made. They're very conservative at times, and lean towards Republicans. But my mom can't stand Palin, thinks McCain will be just as dangerous as Bush, and she told me today the more she reads about Obama and his plans--the more she likes.
Makes me proud!
