1. Let them know you'll be doing so
Really offensive, racist and lying packaging. See more in this thread:

Books-a-Million toll free number
1-800-201-3550

Check your local phone book, and let the local BAM stores (and their subsidiaries below) know that you'll be skipping their store.

Some other places to mention that you'll be avoiding.

"In addition to its flagship Books-A-Million superstore, it operates storefronts badged Books & Company and shopping mall book and greeting card stores under the name Bookland. Most of its stores feature a Joe Muggs café, also the name used for the company's newsstand operations.

In addition to its primary retail component, the corporation includes a book wholesale and distribution subsidiary, American Wholesale Book Company (AWBC), an e-commerce division operating as BOOKSAMILLION.COM, and an internet development and services company, NetCentral, in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 2001, Books-A-Million acquired the Crown Books chain of bookstores."

6. I just called and had a long conversation about this with a sales person
who is going to get word to his supervisor that this website is up.

I told him politely that this was downright sad and divisive and frightening, that in the 21st century, that this kind of racist humor would still exist. That this is a Aunt Jemima sent up that is really about as disgusting as they come. That this election is going to be about the issues, and that this type of sordid message will backfire amongs their customer, counting me as one of them.

He sounded concerned, and promised to get this up the ladder, and count me as a customer complaint.

After dialing the number, I press #2. That got me to a live person.

If enough of us complaint, they will have to take this down.

I also mentioned that I was going to contact my Crown bookstore, and do all that I could to protest this very offensive display of bad taste.

He took me seriously.

4. WTF is Books-a-Million?
I can confidently assure you that I will faithfully boycott them, which won't be too heard because I have never fucking heard of them. Is it some sort of weird jeezus bookstore or somethin?

7. The guy I spoke with had a serious southern accent.
In the end he was very nice, as I was polite. I just spoke to him as though in complete shock and disbelief.

14. Large Southern book chain - with some national subsidiaries, notably Crown Books
Don't forget to go after the subsidiaries. Also since BAM sells online, you can call from anywhere and let them know you won't be placing that order from their website.

9. A big-box bookstore
Same basic idea as Barnes & Noble or Borders. They're concentrated in the South.

15. Book-A-Million is a half assed book store
Except for their religious section, they are woefully understocked

I wouldn't be surprised if it's owned by Fundies

16. They are. The chain is large though, with a webstore, national subsidiaries
and even fundies (maybe especially fundies) listen to the almighty dollar.

From wikipedia
"Books-A-Million Inc. or BAM! was founded in 1917 as a street corner newsstand in Florence, Alabama. Books-A-Million has become the third largest book retailer in the United States (after #1 Barnes & Noble and #2 Borders Books). Its corporate office is located in Birmingham, Alabama, which operates over 200 stores located in the Midwest, the Southeast, and the District of Columbia,* with about 4,900 employees as of 2005.

In addition to its flagship Books-A-Million superstore, it operates storefronts badged Books & Company and shopping mall book and greeting card stores under the name Bookland. Most of its stores feature a Joe Muggs café, also the name used for the company's newsstand operations.

In addition to its primary retail component, the corporation includes a book wholesale and distribution subsidiary, American Wholesale Book Company (AWBC), an e-commerce division operating as BOOKSAMILLION.COM,

and an internet development and services company, NetCentral, in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 2001, Books-A-Million acquired the Crown Books chain of bookstores.

*Crown is nation-wide - no significant web presence - check your local phone book. Lots and lots of stores.
