Hundreds in Anchorage rally against Palin spot on GOP ticket
McClatchy Newspapers

Palin energized McCain campaign, but bloom could be off rose soon
Hundreds of protesters turned out in Anchorage, Alaska, today in a rally against Gov. Sarah Palin's candidacy for vice president. At least 500 protesters were outside the Loussac Library waving signs.

At least 100 Palin supporters were on the other side of the street showing support for the governor.

The protest came hours after the governor held a morning rally in downtown Anchorage, attended by as many as 1,500 cheering supporters, then flew off to Nevada to resume campaigning. It's the first public demonstration against Palin since she accepted McCain's offer on Aug. 29.

The protesters included a mix of Obama supporters, anti-war protesters, abortion-rights advocates and people upset that Palin, when she was Wasilla mayor, asked a city librarian about removing books.

4. When is Palin going to give back the money she personally stole from taxpayers
Sarah Palin took almost $20,000 in per diem she did not deserve. That money was stolen from Alaska taxpayers. When Palin talks about reforming government she should start right in her OWN HOME.

In Anchorage, an Anti-Palin Protest
By Karl Vick
ANCHORAGE -- A couple of hours after Gov. Sarah Palin returned to the Outside, as Alaskans call the Lower 48, her local critics swarmed an Anchorage intersection to correct the widespread impression that the whole of the Last Frontier endorses her candidacy.

The midday protest outside a city library drew a crowd in the high hundreds -- perhaps surging past a thousand -- from the city's relatively liberal environs, who seemed very happy to see one another and be reminded that they are not alone.

"The whole thing grew out of frustration," said Charla Sterne, one of the organizers, who like several people at the rally declined to say where they worked (several said they were state employees and feared retribution).

"Last week this was just ten women sitting around talking about this perception that all of Alaska supports Sarah Palin. We apparently hit a nerve and started a movement," Sterne said.

A sense of festival obtained. There was a woman in a polar bear suit representing "Polar Bear Moms Say: No Palin." Drivers on 36th Avenue saw a little girl waving a sign "Don't Ban My Books."

20. I'd love to see them pull off a recall.
Her policies and attitudes are so loathsome that she doesn't deserve to get a paycheck from the citizens ever again. I suspect a lot of Alaskans on both sides of the aisle are increasingly horrified at the ethics-challenged twit who runs their government.

19. Yipppeee!!!!!
The rally was larger and more successful than people thought it would be! I think we can thank all of the publicity from the ranting right wing radio host Eddie Burke for this. He went on air calling the anti Palin rally a bunch of "socialist baby killing maggots" and read off the names and phone numbers of the rally organizers, encouraging his listeners to call. The organizers then received tons of threatening phone calls from pro-Palin people. Police were circling down there to make sure everything goes OK.

Come on Alaskan dems, let's turn this sucker blue! YES WE CAN

27. What kind of dumbass walks over to protestors with a big stupid sign like that??
And her sign looked like total gibberish... anyone would be well within their rights to pop her one if she whacked them while walking by with her dumbass sign.

God.. it's like "when church ladies attack" or something. Bet walking over there made her feel like a hardass rebel.

Here's what they have on Progressive Alaska about it:

http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2008/09/anchorage-anti-palin-protest-sets.html

The above article includes photos and an article..

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hWAVXHNngbk/SMxVh50nYFI/AAAAAAAACBs/RxwE6Pn8JSE/s400/hockey+mom+for+abama.jpg

And the Anchorage Daily News is reporting 1,500 showed up.. but at the Big Eddie event I went to tonight, they said there were probably 150 more than that..

BTW.. Big Ed Schultz, his wife, and his "team Fargo crew" all went to the rally too according to Eddie!

MIDTOWN: Hundreds show up when word spreads over Internet.

A crowd of anti-Sarah Palin protesters gathered in Midtown Anchorage soon after the Republican nominee for vice president left Alaska to resume campaigning in the Lower 48.

The Saturday protest in front of the Loussac Library appeared bigger than any Anchorage has seen in recent memory. The crowd looked to be in the high hundreds at least, and organizers said they counted 1,500. It included roughly 100 counter protesters supporting Palin.

...like in St. Paul? I mean, afterall, they were protesting a Republican! Surely that warrants the same gestapo treatment the protesters, NPR correspondents and EMS workers received at the RNC. :sarcasm:

40. I was thinking about this too
I wonder if the Anchorage Police Department is pissed off at Palin over troopergate? Monegan was a popular guy in Anchorage and ex chief of police here.

The APD were driving around monitoring things, but didn't do a whole lot. Frankly, I think they were more worried about the wingnut threats of violence the rally organizers received than anything else.

I feel really bad for the way the St Paul protesters were treated. Someone said on another post that some of them are still in jail. Unbelievable fascist BS.
