This isn't a chicken-little post. I actually think Obama will win comfortably at the end of the day. I'm also not naive enough to think that lying isn't always part of campaigning. But in this case, McCain and Palin have potentially opened a door that can never be closed. Candidates frequently stretch the truth, exaggerate, or make connections that don't exist, but it's rare that you see outright lies, particularly at this level and frequency. If it works, there will be no turning back. Candidates will lie with impunity and there won't even be an effort anymore to couch the lie in some degree of truth. There needs to be consequences, and it's the duty of the media to call them out once and for all.

McCain could not have done the same thing to Hillary because she is much better known to voters nationally than Obama.
