The GOP and its media enablers figured out thirty years ago they can't tell the truth about what they're doing because, if they did, most of them would be sent straight to jail for treason. On the other hand, if they lied and were caught, the consequences would be just as dire. But nobody can guarantee that a big secret like treason will remain secret forever. So the GOP leadership have spent the better part of three decades assaulting the very concept of "truth" itself. They spin, manipulate, manage, conceal, reveal, and massage the truth in such a bewildering array of ways that it loses its power. Nothing is real, everything is open to interpretation, one man's treason is another man's patriotism, etc.
Once the concept of truth has been degraded into merely one option among many (a useful tool but nothing to get too attached to), nothing the GOP does has any consequences any more. They can do whatever they like, because the rest of us have lost the moral compass by which to judge them. It's all relative, you see? Lie us into a war? Well, politicians do that, don't they? No big deal. Destroy the economy to benefit a handful of billionaire cronies? Well, that's just business, isn't it? Rig elections, exclude voters, manipulate the polls? Hey, elections are a game, and the object of games is to win! USA! USA! USA!
Nothing is false anymore, so nothing is true.
