I for the life of me can't remember the name of the ad. I'm sure someone could help me on that.

But basically it's the one where the creepy sounding voice over woman is talking about how Barack is desperate because Palin is so awesome, and resorted to calling her a liar (oddly, the ad never refutes this point...). At the end there is a picture of Barack looking down, as if shamed, and the voice over monster says "HOW DISRESPECTFUL!"

Maybe I'm reading a bit too much into it, but does this ad strike anyone else as racist? As in, "The uppity black man should learn to show the white woman more respect"? That's the vibe I get from it anyway.

Horrible ad.

"Obama was disrespecting Palin", Ad

McCain is really crossing the line with his latest racially charged ad,
IMO and hears why, When I heard it, it instantly brought to mind what happen to Emmitt Till

Emmitt Till, was young black man, visiting relatives down south. Emmitt didn't understand the racial divide between whites and blacks because he was from the North. Trying to show his cousins that he wasn't afraid of whites. He looked at a white woman and said "bye baby".

Later on in the week, two white men, came to Emmitt's Uncle's home and took Emmitt from his family.
He was never seen alive again.

The white men were tried and found innocent of any wrong doing. Shortly after the trial had ended the two white men proudly told the world on camera how and why they killed Emmitt Till. They were paid $4,000.00 for their story.

They said, "Bryant admitted to journalist William Bradford Huie that he and his brother had killed Till. Milam claimed that initially their intention was to scare Till into line by pistol-whipping him and threatening to throw him off a cliff. Milam explained that contrary to expectations, regardless of what they did to Till, he never showed any fear, never seemed to believe they would really kill him, and maintained a defiant attitude towards them concerning his actions. Thus the brothers said they felt they were left with no choice but to fully make an example of Till, and they killed him."

Emmitt Till was killed for being disrespectful to a white woman. McCain's ad is playing on that same racial hatred. Sadly as late as 2007 the evidence of that racial hate was shone to be alive and well, "In 2006 a Mississippi historical marker marking the place of Till's death was defaced, and in August 2007 it went missing."

It sickens me and scares me half to death that no one in the media is calling McCain out on this AD

I say this with utmost respect and empathy, Please stop being surprised.
After Obama's nomination acceptance speech when he went after McCain's temperament, I perceived Chris Matthews was offended that Obama would ever target such a great elder stateman's character. To Matthews, it was disrespectful. I'm almost positive that's the word Matthews used. During the primaries, Hillary Clinton, full of pride, made it known that it was either she or McCain that were the better candidates, not once, but at least twice. Please, don't be surprised because we're always being surprised and thrown off balance when we see outright racism. We've got to expect it because by the time we've digested what just happened, the GOP is on with their next hit.

and this one, though a toon, is priceless - the GOP is ALWAYS ready with shock & awe, just to keep us off balance.

I, for one, joined DU because it's so action driven, whether by emailing, calling, spreading news, whatever it takes. When I see those ads or racist parlance, now I say, There they go again. What can I do right now?

4. I'm thinking that this is aimed at women, particularly those who may have been Clinton supporters.
I've heard Republicans talking about how Obama called a woman reporter "Sweetie" as well. I didn't get a racist vibe from it but then I'm a white woman from Brooklyn.

5. You'd have to have the IQ of a gnat to be swayed by that
"Disrespectful"? Aside from the fact he hasn't been at all -- she's a frickin' liar. What do they expect him to do? Shower her with roses?

That has to be the most idiotic ad.

6. There are many who have the IQ of a gnat
As I said in my OP in another thread, I believe the GOP is indeed playing the race card in the most revolting way.

I'm not sure how many here remember some of the dicussions from several years ago in which stalwart DUers were DEFENDING various forms of "Southern heritage," such as display of the Confederate flag, organizations such as Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy, and so on. There were many, and maybe they're still here and still hold the same beliefs, that there was nothing overtly or covertly racist about the perpetuation of "Southern heritage."

And I put "Southern heritage" in quotes because I mean specifically a racist, deeply Christian wth a capital C, patriarchal androcentric, militaristic culture that harkens back to an ante-bellum South.

"Southern heritage" and all the awful things it represents is alive and well. And I suspect there are many here who cringe at the thought.

Tansy Gold is one of them

7. The accusations in the ad are excuses that were used in the south
to justify lynching black men. First they say Obama calls her "good looking" (see, he's lusting after our white women). Then Obama calls her a liar (he's insulting the virtue of our white women). "How disrespectful." They're sending out a message to white supremacists and other crazies that Obama doesn't know his place. It's no mistake that he's actually been called uppity and this ad is out. This isn't an ad accusing Obama of being a sexist. It's about blowing the dog whistle that Obama is white America's worst fear and that white women must be defended, no matter the cost.

8. I get an overly moronic vibe. The arrogance is stunning.
I took it to mean that all of us should be kissing her ass. I hate to tell 'em this, but even if they got elected, the put-downs now would never stop. They'd best not hold their breath, waiting on "deference".

The Queen Mum, she ain't.

9. They're all about respect and deference.
The less they merit these things, the more loudly they demand them. This is the conservative sense of entitlement.

Racism may only be one aspect.
