Poll question: Who would you pick for Senate Majority Leader when Obama is President?
Aside from who you like most on the issues, who do you think would be the most effective majority leader?
Feel free to explain your reasons or name someone else.

2. Clinton, totally
While she wasn't my choice for POTUS, I think you need the kind of political calculation mixed with moxie and unrelenting drive that she exhibits.

3. I don't know.

She shows backbone when she's fighting for her own career but neither Clinton has ever been so good at defending progressive values. I think we need someone who won't be too quick to split the difference.

4. She ran for Prime Minister and Obama ran for Prez. This is a good place for her.
She was good at policy and Obama was good at politics.

6. It should be Durbin or Kerry.
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 04:53 PM by Radical Activist
The Majority Leader should be a strong Obama ally that will help push his legislation through the Senate. It needs to be someone well liked and respected by other Senators. We don't need to repeat the mistake of Bill Clinton's first two years where divisions within the Democratic caucus stopped us from passing good things like health care.

Durbin and Kerry Obama's two most important supporters in the campaign, and they are better liked by their colleagues than Hilary. The fact that many Senators backed Obama, despite knowing Hillary longer, says something about whether she would be effective as Majority Leader.

15. It will be Durbin. Kerry wants to lead investigations into BushInc and he can't do it
from majority leader position.

Plus - I am shocked that so many don't even REMEMBER what happened in the 90s - do they REALLY want a repeat of senate Dems closing down investigations of BushInc the way Mitchell did for Clinton? THAT is exactly what would happen if Democrats pull for another closed government protector in ANY position of power.

9. For that role I like Dodd or Durbin.
I think John Kerry would make an outstanding Secretary of State.

13. Durbin - he wants it and he'll be GREAT at it. NO CLOSED GOVERNMENT PROTECTORS. Those of you
who really believe a closed government Democrat deserves to be senate majority leader are really siding with BushInc whether you realize it or not.

18. It's got to be someone who isn't afraid of speaking out
Boxer would be great. Clinton has earned consideration for the position, based on the toughness she displayed in her campaign (although I don't agree with some of her foreign affairs positions). So has Feingold. I could live with either of those three.

17. since that is up to the democrats in the Senate...
I'd let them decide...

Frankly, committee chairmenships are much more powerful, in their own way.

But frankly, a good Majority Leader must understand fully the inner dealings of teh Senate, has to be able to work within that framework in order to promote the agenda of the party.

One of the reasons Reid had so much trouble was he was always on defense. In his case, the president set the agenda and he was reacting to that agenda.

When Obama takes office, he will work with the majority leader in order to see what can be done and how far they can go...

20. Avoid a major Dem fight over thus unless
Reid will not go after Lieberman. Reid is a mean little MF. If somebody replaces him, they not only have to have some seniority,

but the stones to bite people. I haven't been enamored of Reid, but this could turn into a huge party splitting fight. One of those has been enough.

Plus it will delay action on major legislation, and make Dems look stupid to the populace.

Although we may be stuck with her for awhile. Include lots of female possibilities.

23. Reid and Pelosi have given us a bad name
by handing the worse President ever just about everything that he asked for and
for taking any punishment for Bush's war crimes "off the table".
Hillary Clinton has the "balls" to take control and get some legislation
passed that is good for the American people.
