Well this is it: We've known for weeks that the McCain campaign had decided to fight dirty, and were putting out a series of ads that were outright, indefensible lies. They've heard the cries of "foul" coming from the American public, from reporters, and even now from Karl Rove himself. I don't expect that they'll stop any time soon (it's been the most lucrative strategy for them so far), but they've seen the backlash from it, and they're eager to cash in: just like they've latched onto the "change" campaign slogan, and even gone so far as to say that Obama is "more of the same", they're now accusing Obama of playing dirty, and misleading the American public. But like everything else coming out of the McCain campaign, these are also lies. Take a look at this article:
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/mccain-palin_distorts_our_finding.html It's an article from FactCheck.org, saying that when a new McCain attack ad quoted their site in saying that Obama's attacks on Palin were "completely false" and "misleading" America, THEY were lying: the quotes about Palin didn't come from Obama, or anyone in his campaign. McCain has also sent out emails to all of his supporters saying that "These misleading, offensive attacks must be stopped"...
Folks, McCain is once again stealing the issue from Democrats, but this one is key: with all of the allegations being thrown around, and all of the talk about leadership, experience, and change, it's going to come down how the candidates handle this election. The way McCain has handled this campaign should be Obama's ticket into the white house: you want to know what kind of leadership McCain offers? look at his lies and double talk, how he's trying to mislead the American public (not to mention the whole disenfranchising millions of voters thing)... You want to know about his experience? Look at his conduct, and how he's avoiding real topics by spreading lies. You want to know if the Maverick will really change anything in Washington? Look at how he's using the same old dirty tactics...
This really is THE issue: more than anything else, Americans hate being lied to. They'll forgive alot, hell they'll even overlook a lack of experience and stance on the issues (see the last two Presidential elections), if they think the guy on their side of the aisle has good character. But they HATE being lied to: every sleazy, self-serving politican in the history of this country has lied to them, and screwed them over. And McCain is doing it again, they just don't know it yet. Obama and the Democrats have been slow to react to this, to come out and say publicly: they're lying to you, they're lying about me, and it has to end! And now McCain is taking advantage of it, and claiming that Obama is lying! If they paint Obama as a liar, it doesn't matter what he says in the future, and it won't matter when he tries to debunk McCain's lies: people won't believe him. At the very worst, McCain will succeed in painting BOTH of them as liars, and whenever the media starts complaining about McCain's lies -- even if it IS Rove and O'reilly -- people will just say "it's politics as usual, and Obama is doing it too"...
And while it seems especially hypocritical that McCain would call Obama sleazy and misleading, this is one of the most treasured Republican tactics: to lie about your opponent being a liar -- a lie in a lie. It's mindblowing enough to completely fool voters, and it works exactly because of what I said before: Americans HATE being lied to. As soon as you whisper "hey, you're being fooled..." peoples' ears prick up, and they're willing to trust anything you say -- and distrust whatever the person being talked about responds with.
Obama and the Democratic party CANNOT let McCain control this issue: McCain is the one lying, despicably so, and EVERY DAY. We need to see them say that, and not just in speeches that don't even make the prime time news, and not just coming from Obama: they need to see it in an ad, in writing: show McCain's allegations, show factcheck.org stating that they are wrong, and misleading, then call the doubletalk express what he is: a liar. Oh, and throw in some of those quotes from Rove and O'Reilly saying how McCain has gone too far to boot.
