Help wanted! Blabber mouths needed! Have you got the gift of gab?
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 08:51 PM by Breeze54

There's so much at stake in this election -- fixing our economy, solving the energy crisis, dealing with climate change, and restoring America's position in the world.

You and I know that. But John McCain is trying to distract voters from the real issues. And he's willing to take the low road by making cheap personal attacks and lying outright about Barack and his record.

It's up to each of us to talk to voters across the country and make sure they know what this election is really about.

We have an exciting new tool called Neighbor to Neighbor that makes it easy to talk to potential supporters about Barack and the issues that matter.

Help get the conversation back on track today by making phone calls.

Nothing is more powerful than having undecided voters hear from ordinary people. And right now, that's needed more than ever.

No prior experience is required. Neighbor to Neighbor gives you a list of potential supporters, suggested topics to talk about, and an easy way to report back on who you've contacted.

With less than eight weeks until Election Day, we can't allow voters to lose focus on the big issues and get swept up by the smears and lies coming out of the McCain campaign.

Reach out to fellow voters now and grow this movement for change:

Thanks,

Jon

I've been planning on it!

2. I Knocked on 50 Doors Yesterday and
all I got for it was five conversations, only two of them undecided voters. And a broken toe. Am going to start the phone calls this week. I would be willing to bet that they are a more efficient way of connecting with voters.

3. It's much more fun on the phone but you're a good person
for getting out there on foot. I did that for Kerry and it sucked!

Most of the people were nice but it was cold and rainy and I was alone.

I didn't like that at all and I was out of state for two days.

Phone calling is much more fun!! :D

ALSO --->

On Sunday, September 21st, we're organizing hundreds of "MoveOn for Obama" calling parties nationwide.
We'll reach out to every MoveOn member in every swing state to help them sign up to volunteer for Obama.
If we can mobilize tens of thousands of volunteers for Obama in key states, we'll help push Barack
over the top in November.

Plus, next week is MoveOn's 10th birthday, so we'll celebrate with cake and ice cream after we're done calling!

MoveOn members in your area will be eager to help, but they need somewhere to gather.

Can you sign up to host a "MoveOn for Obama" party? Or if not, go to one!!

4. The Obama Office Said That
canvassing on foot increased turnout by 10-12% while phone canvassing increased turnout by 1-2%.

I canvassed with my girlfriend, who is Chinese and a natural extrovert. It was a great cultural experience for her to see the political process and also meet a random group of Americans in their homes.

Glad to hear phone calling was fun for you. I've done cold sales calls and didn't like it. I will be more likely to try the phones this week.

6. That's true that door knocking increases support and turnout but
I can't afford the gas and I'm no spring chicken anymore. :(

I did pretty good at both, if I do say so myself. ;)

We even called some people back to see if they voted and how it went.

The Democrats won the state where I knocked on doors too!

Went Democratic for the first time in 16 years! ;)

In fact, I think many here at DU would be awesome at this!

8. Be careful with the phones...
I helped out in 2006 by calling people, and many of them were really upset by the extreme number of phone calls they had already received...especially the robo-calls. A couple of people even said they were tempted to vote rethug just for spite. This was in a solidly blue area.

13. Last time I did it, the calls went to people who requested follow ups or contact.
Hopefully that's the case this time too!@ But thanks for the reminder and if that happens,
and it did to me too, I just apologized and let them know "we" had new volunteers and sorry
for the inconvenience. Usually they were understanding about it. ;)

9. Ok I have a question
are these calls to help organize volunteers or to persuade people to vote for Obama in November?

11. I used to be a phone room sales manager for a photography studio.
Yes, that was me calling during your dinner hour :hide:

A couple of tips - for whatever it's worth-

Smile while you are talking. (we literally had mirrors at all of the stations)
People can hear the smile in your voice.

Take the script and rewrite it in your own words so it sounds natural.

Ask questions like - have you been following Obama at all during the campaign? Or Who did you first support, and praise that person.

Make it fun!

The last time I made calls for a candidate was for Biden before the Iowa primaries.
It was great talking to fellow Democrats :)

16. I'm not opening that can of worms asking who did they support previously!
No way in hell!! :P

I'll stick to the script and adapt it, so I don't sound like a robot.

I hate 'those' calls...ugh! But just talk like your talking to your friend!

That's what I did and people really respond to that. Be friendly and caring and POLITE!

Great tips, pirhana! I've 'worked the phones' in a lot of jobs.

I'll leave my tech support tone at home that day though!
