> People say they would be happy to return the Alaska rebate for green policies!

That Palin should have spent those additional funds on alternative energy, AK National Guard, addressing the meth problem, improving education, or a myriad other problems facing Alaskans, rather than as a payoff of the voters. (But then that was the real reason for the rebate, to boost her approval and gain national attention.)

I guess as one lone legislator he was a little nervous to go out on a limb. I wonder if John McCain has any kind of a clue how much he has damaged Sarah Palin within the state. When she comes back here to finish her gubernatorial term, no one will take her seriously anymore. She was incredibly stupid to accept this offer.

50. NY Times Looks at Palin on Social Issues
By the Editorial Board of the New York Times, September 10, 2008

http://theboard.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/ ... ly-agenda/

"The alliance said that attendees at a “women’s summit” in 2007 had urged the new governor to tackle the following problems, but got no response:

Increase funding for Denali Kid Care (Alaska’s State Children’s Health Insurance Program, or Schip). Alaska is one of a minority of states that fail to fund health insurance for families up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

Decrease the incidence of domestic violence and sexual assault in Alaska. Alaska’s rape rate is 2.5 times the national average and Alaska is No. 1 in the nation, per capita, in women murdered by men.

Provide medically accurate sex education in public schools. Alaska leads the nation in the rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea, and has high rates of teen pregnancy.

Health-care advocates expressed acute disappointment about the failure of the expansion of Denali Kid Care, which would have covered about 1,200 children, and 530 pregnant women, using only $825,000 of state funding. They said the measure had the strong support of a broad range of constituencies — including hospitals, pharmacists, nurses, women’s and religious organizations — but died in committee after the governor rebuffed the advocates’ pleas to speak up on its behalf.

The alliance provided a list of other dismal social indicators that it says Alaska — with its multibillion dollar state budget surplus — should be hard at work reversing:

Alaska ranks near the bottom for providing children’s health care.
Alaska ranks 43rd in the nation for percentage of children in preschool.
Alaska is 39th in the nation for high school graduates; 10 percent of high schoolers drop out.
Alaska ranks near the bottom for students completing college and for levels of high school dropouts.
Alaska is one of only 11 states without a pay-equity law.
Alaska has the nation’s highest suicide rate."

54. Posted on www.politico.com's blog
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 01:51 PM by JPZenger
A post above noted Palin's opposition to basic building codes. I looked into it and found the following post on www.politico.com, which is apparently based upon an LA Times news article:

"In 1997, she broke a tie in a city council vote to kill building codes. Even some area homebuilders supported the building codes.

"Among the many similarities to Bush she bears, Palin -- like Bush -- is a borrow & spend fiscal fraud. She took a town of less than 9,000 people that was debt-free in 1996 and ran it over $18 million into debt by 2003. She implemented a 25% increase in the most regressive tax possible -- the sales tax -- to finance her hockey rink project. In 2002, Pailn used city employees (on the clock), city equipment, and city facilities to work on her campaign for Lt. Governor.

She opposed an ordinance changing the closing time of bars in Wasilla from 5:00 AM to 3:00 AM. The Wasilla police chief at the time, Irl Stambaugh, supported the change as a public-safety measure. Palin, who had accepted numerous campaign contributions from local bar owners and the liquor lobby, fired Stambaugh immediately upon taking office.

On top of all that, it appears that Palin is either a major league flip-flopper, or a hypocrite. From yesterday's LA Times: "McCain has made opposition to pork-barrel spending a central theme of his 2008 campaign. "Earmarking deprives federal agencies of scarce resources, at the whim of individual members of Congress," McCain has said. But records show that Palin -- first as mayor of Wasilla and recently as governor of Alaska -- was far from shy about pursuing tens of millions in earmarks for her town, her region and her state.

She actively sought federal funds -- a campaign that began to pay off only after she hired a lobbyist with close ties to Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who long controlled federal spending as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He made funneling money to Alaska his hallmark. Steven Silver was a former chief of staff for Stevens. After he was hired, Wasilla obtained funding for several projects in 2002, including an additional $600,000 in transportation funding. That year, a local water and sewer project received $1.5 million, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, which combs federal spending measures to identify projects inserted by congressional members. This year she submitted to Congress a list of Alaska projects worth $197.8 million."

55. The importance of Saturday's demonstrations in Anchorage
nationwide. (From ProgressiveAlaska.com. http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2008/09/srise-lost-chapter-fifty-six-importance.html )

The photographs of Alaska women - with a supporting cast of supportive males - demonstrating outside the biggest public library in Alaska (insert subtle inside joke), are circulating across the internet. They give a strong validity to two important aspects in the growing nationwide awareness of Gov. Palin's vast shortcomings.

One is the GOP point that Palin is a strong woman, supported by Alaska women. The other is the growing national perception about how Alaskans, particularly, in this case, Alaska's women view our future, if it were somehow left in the presidential hands of Sarah Palin.

I find it quite disgusting that the Alaska press, so far, has so fully and inaccurately portrayed comparisons between the GOP Palin lovefest, and the Loussac Library women's event. I just heard Steve Heimel, on APRN's morning Alaska summary, inaccurately compare the two, in favor of the faux event organized on Palin's behalf. Every person I've spoken with who was at both events, estimated the Palin crowd at the new convention center, as less than 1,000. And everyone outside the MSM Alaska media, including the Anchorage police, has categorized the women's crowd at around 1,500 or more. And Heimel - as is the case with other reporters - failed to accurately compare Eddie Burke's mostly male, pathetic counter-demonstration.

More importantly, to those who were at the GOP event, well, almost a third the crowd may have been drummed up, and some others were most likely paid to be there. Here's from one reporter who chooses to remain anonymous:

The oil companies have plants in the Palin/McCain audience. I saw a guy on TV a few days ago yelling "Drill, Baby, Drill". This was in a city down south somewhere at a rally. The SAME guy was at the Palin rally in the stands behind Sarah. And he was in coordination with a McCain campaigner who handed him one of the "S-A-R-A-H" letters in the stands behind here on the podium. Twice he stood up and shouted "Drill, Baby, Drill".

There were a group of three women behind me that had Palin/McCain hats and shirts too with the same slogans. Who cares about drilling but the oilies? Everybody uses plants, but do they fly them all over the US to do it??? I'd love to go to these rallies and start taking pictures of themes.

Outside Alaska, women's groups, inspired by the Loussac demonstration, are starting activist organizations and information distributing web sites. And comparisons of the Alaska crowd, interpolated on the size of other city or state populations, are being made:

some very rough cypherin’

1700 women within the Alaskan population =

80,000+ jampacked at the Los Angeles Coliseum in California

65,000 at DisneyWorld in Florida

62,000 at Madison Square Garden

60,000 at Texas Stadium in Dallas

This morning's Ed Schultz program, airing and streamed soon on Anchorage's KUDO, and at hundreds of stations across the country, will also show how strongly and independently Alaskans feel and express themselves on Palin.

I'll be quite busy working this week, so expect less posts. Sorry! Stay tuned at Mudflats, Alaska Real, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis and Just a Girl from Homer, though.

65. That guy who's talking right now needs to have his own radio show
He could be Alaska's answer to Mike Malloy.

70. Ed is the perfect facilitator for this
Big, beefy, corn-fed midwesterner that loves his football, hunts birds and fishes but is a staunch union-loving Democrat. He won't scare them one bit and they will talk to and with him.

I've said it before and will say it again. I am well to the left of Big Eddie, but there is not one Dem-leaning host who is better able to make converts out of leaners. His basic pitch is common economic sense to the working class and there is nothing we need more.
