8. Notice that the last worst day (Black Monday 1987) was after 2 Reagan terms?
Coincidence....

I think not.

19. Actually, it is BO's fault ...
seriously ...

I post on a mixed board that has a handful of straight democrats, about double the number of card carrying moron Rs, and a majority of spineless R pukes who call themselves anything from libertarians, to moderates to independants.

Anyway, for the last six months, when the market takes a downturn, the resident board investment types back the firebreathing Rbots in saying that "the word" around Wall Street is that all the investors are telling people they are bailing out because they are trying to get out ahead of a BO presidency and all the massive taxes they will be stuck with.

They ALL seriously believe this.

People will tell themselves anything just so they don't have to admit they are wrong.

3. Compared to Black Monday in 1987
"a Dark Monday but not a Black Monday"

AIG will not be saved by taxpayer money.

17. Different scenario back then. That was when the financial markets were regulated somewhat.
Now, it's just in freefall.

20. But it was still after 2 terms of GOP rule.
I wish people would see this for what it is: the end result of GOP policies.

29. Well, let's talk about that for a second. They were both caused by GOP policies, to be sure.
But the 1987 crash was due to the S&L crisis when Reagan decided to deregulate the banking system. More banks went bankrupt in the 1980s than during the Great Depression.

This is a financial markets crisis, due to those companies speculating on the market about sub-prime housing and other poor investments, what are called "market losers".

They are inter-related, to be sure, but a little different.
Two heads from the same yoke.

This crisis is more severe in that there is no one to bail out AIG.
Not even Lehman can get someone to help dig them out of the $613 Billion dollars in debt on loans they have.
That is what caused them to collapse.

No bank could take their debt on because of the poor decisions made by their Board of Directors to make so many poor investments.
Their investments would never pay off if Lehman were to have been bailed out.

30. That was right after a huge runup, not after 8 years of stagnation
1987 was in retrospect just a correction from a market that was a bit ahead of itself.

This is more like the roof caving in during the slow collapse of an abandoned building.

I predicted last night, low to mid 4's. Oh, and on Sept. 17th, 2001, it was down, IIRC about 680-something. That's when I bought my stocks. Which are slightly off today, but not bad.

On edit; it was 684.

36. Yes, we owe him.
We owe him free (single-payer universal) health care, just like we all deserve (and owe to ourselves).
We owe him free mental health care to help him with issues caused by anything at all, just like we all deserve (and owe to ourselves).
(If only one of our candidates was behind such a concept, and could actually get it through congress, past the medical and pharmaceutical lobbyists.)

We don't owe him the oval office. He hasn't earned that, doesn't deserve that.
