Heres the deal. The conventions and the VP picks cancelled each other out. Obama put on a hell of a show, McCain put on a snooze fest. The difference is, Obama's potential post-convention gains were cut short because of the Palin pick and the fact that the Republican convention started right afterwards. And since Biden was picked right before Obama's convention, there was not a lot of media time for introducing to the larger part of "low information America" as there has been for Palin.
On top of that, a large part of the media seems to be avoiding covering Obama and Biden on the campaign trail. I think a lot of that has to do with Sarah Palin. For better or worse, the media finds her to be intriguing for a lot of reasons, but mostly because it was an unexpected move on McCain's part. Had he chosen Romney or Pawlenty, the interest would have died down a lot sooner.
Taking all that into account, McCain's gambling plea for attention by picking Sarah Palin is all ready starting to lose it's mark. The polls are tightening back up. Regardless of how unimportant some may find it, SNL is all ready ripping into her. Charlie Gibson, of all people, very handily and objectively exposed how very unqualified and unpresidential she is. HOWEVER, she served the purpose her choosing was intended for and that was injecting some life into McCain's campaign due to the intrigue and surprise of the choice. Had he chosen Mitt Romney or one of the other predictable choices, his campaign would have continued to die a slow death with no hope of a boost between now and November.
But we have another game changing series of events. We have the debates. Think about how the media has covered this election so far. These 4 debates (including the VP debate) are going to be the most covered item of the week they were covered. And judging by the record breaking ratings that coverage of major election events have received this season, there is no doubt that a number of voters will be watching the debates in historic proportions.
I have a lot of faith that Obama and Biden can decisively make their argument for the White House during the debates to come. Barack will beat McCain on both substance and style. Biden will beat Palin because... well I d,n't even have to list why.
And until that happens, I'm not going to pay attention to all these polls. The polling methods for some of the pollsters is highly questionable in the first place, but even if that wasn't the case, the debates can change the whole game for either candidate.
So my suggestion is, we all need to chill, donate and/or volunteer and wait to see what happens when what will probably be the most watched presidential debates, in history, go down.
