I Shook Hands with Barack Today!
We recently returned from the Obama rally in Grand Junction, Colorado, today, where I learned something new about Barack, at a human level. Please keep in mind that I am completely paralyzed below my neck, and I am unable to breathe without a ventilator. People in the local campaign office knew of my family's support for Obama, and helped my sister Nancy place me, and other disabled folk, in an area close to the rostrum. Upon his arrival, Barack greeted several people along the security barrier, including the area where I sat in my wheelchair next to my sister and nephew Miles. When Barack moved in front of me, he reached out, and touched my hand, while saying good morning. He realized that I could not move, so he reached farther over the rail, grabbed my arm, looked directly in my eyes, and smiled at me with the warmth of a long lost relative. I served as a naval officer 6 years prior to my injury, and have been confined to a wheelchair for over twenty years. His genuine kindness reminded me of returning home to family after deployments overseas.

Many of us who frequently visit DU have heard his stump speech online, and know the verses by heart, with the exception of his comments about financial institutions crashing on Wall Street, today. After concluding his remarks, he returned to the rope-line, shaking as many hands as possible. Since we briefly met him earlier, we figured he would move quickly past our seating area, to thank other members of the audience. He must have remembered greeting us earlier, because this time, he grasped my arm, and said thank you several times, appreciating our many hours of baking in the late summer sun.

I grew up in a politically active family, and attended campaign rallies frequently in my younger days, until entering the Navy. In fact, during college, I worked on Capital Hill for a Colorado congressman. As much as I admired the other politicians, speaking with them reminded me more of business meetings than family reunions. God knows, after twenty years of drifting away from friends, and constantly preparing my psyche for an accidental disconnection of my ventilator, and inevitable death, my heart discourages me from creating many new emotional bonds. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary when meeting Barack Obama, until I returned home, and told my mother about our encounter. When I told mom about Barack purposely reaching out to grasp my arm, and making me feel as if he traveled to Colorado especially to see me, my eyes filled with tears, and I could not speak.

It would have been great to have an actual conversation with Barack, but that was impractical. Yet, the power of his presence became overwhelming to me once I had an opportunity to reflect upon it. Perhaps, my impressions would have been different if I did not believe Barack's mission was to save our Republic. Whatever the reasons, I wish everyone reading this could personally meet Barack before the election, or afterward, when he is president!

Vote for Barack! You know I will!

It really shows that Obama really does connect with people if you meet him up close. Some of these complaints about him being unapproachable and aloof are just wrong.

needed to do -- a token acknowledgment, he came in to grasp your arm, look you in the eye, and CONNECT. He CARES.

Not like John McCain. He is genuine and seems to really care. I think his time as a community organizer helped him learn to connect with the struggles of everyday people. I am glad he somehow reached something within you, he will need to connect with all Americans to get this country back on its feet.

28. Barack Obama does not make me swoon. But when I see and hear of the way...
He connects with others and what he inspires in them, I swoon.

I just swooned. ;)

(Okay, and maybe I swooned a little bit when I shook his hand last March. What I remember most was being surprised how soft his hands were and, as you mentioned, how he makes a point to look directly at the person (when possible) and really connect.)

:hi: neighbor! Best line of the day: "If you believe that, I've got a bridge in Alaska to sell ya!"

I went with 4 teenagers, so, my perspective is a bit different. I feel like a 5 year old "I got to see Ooo-ba-ma!, I got to see Ooo-baa-ma!" It was standing room only n Pueblo Fair Grounds and many didn't get to come in. Capacity baby!

41. THIS is the kind of thing repukes try to imitate but CAN'T.
Obama isn't NEW to caring about how the economy affects people. He's been involved in food shelves and getting programs started to help people get back on their feet after losing jobs.

When someone who is truly a DEM at heart goes out on the campaign trail they draw strength from the hardships people face every day and yet still come out with hope in their hearts to support real change that can really make our country the great nation it was MEANT to be when those first great Americans signed with ink and underscored with their blood an honest committment to liberty and justice for all --- not just the top 5%.

A REAL DEM does connect with the people whose support is needed to win an election because a REAL DEM knows that the people who elect HIM are the people HE serves.

Isn't it funny that the McLame camp has to fake numbers like 20 thousand and Obama routinely draws 30 - 80 thousand wherever he goes.

How big was the crowd where you were I wonder?

humanity and yours. A really remarkable post, well done.

72. It seems clear that either Obama is the genuine article ...
... or he's a LOT better at faking sincerity. Either way, I'll take it. :silly:

74. Thank you for sharing. I imagine it must be like meeting Lincoln or FDR.
I am not religious, but I have this unshakable feeling that Obama was born TO SAVE OUR REPUBLIC.

Were I religious, I'd have to say that THE ONE, who the Neo-Cons refer to from their biblical beliefs and deliberately smeared Obama as, has actually been hiding in THEIR midst the whole time...Sarah Palin. And they have embraced her fully.

It's not that other politicians do not care but they've forgotten how to stop long enough to "see" regular people.

He did travel to Colorado especially to see you.

I wish I could personally meet him too, but I would prefer, he become President and save our great nation and retire after a long and wonderful career of public service.

86. Democratic presidential nominees never do "rallies" in California.
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 04:32 PM by GreenTea
Instead they just do closed door fund raisers to put money into the democratic nominees back pocket, they do this in California a few times during the campaign when they want to add money to the Dems nominees coffers....but they never do rallies with live people here in CA....because the democratic nominees, also, always have California in their back pocket as well...it's a given.

We in California (at least in liberal Northern California) never ever see all the political ads you people talk about every day and that news organizations run and discuss each night, by either McCain or Obama, the ads that all the backwards states people see on their TV's in their same regressive states each day! The nominees don't run them in N. California....

Moderates, religious clowns, fence sitters, undecided morons, heads in the sand frightened excuses for a human being, who don't have a clue what either parties ideology is, or don't even know what the word ideology means, you all know the types in those backward regressive states!

I just love all of you progressives though, what a pain it must be to be have to be around those others that I mentioned and read about each day!!

87. I shook hands with Newt Gingrich years ago.
It was like holding a fish. About the worst handshake I ever felt in my life. It was so bad in fact, that I began to wonder if politicians developed that type of handshake due to the many hands that they shook. Jeez...he shoulda waved like a girl in a parade.

Unfortunately, didn't get close enough to shake hands with him, but I did have a blast watching him let McCain have it with both barrels over economic policy today.

90. What a wonderful story and experience.
He truly is a wonderful caring person and you can really tell that from your story. It is so amazing that he came around again and took the initiative to reach out and grab your arm. I am so happy for you that you were able to experience that. You will always remember this special moment and you will always have a piece of Barack in your heart.

93. Tears in these eyes too........
What a truly, truly beautiful story, magnificently written. I'm not even American, I'm just an outsider looking in, but every time I hear him speak and see him interviewed I get an overwhelming sense of his humanity and warmth and I'm falling head over heels with the fella. Hey, not that way....well...yep, that way too!

But your account of your experience with him simply confirmed to me how I suspect he is as a human being, so thank you so much.

Take care of yourself.

PS Do you write professionally? You should, you have a real gift.

97. My Family Tells Me to Start Writing...
Last year, I earned a master degree in Military History from Norwich University in Vermont. Through that 18 month course, my studies produced over 1,500 pages of research material and discussion questions. Since then, writing has not been much of a priority for me.
Perhaps, more thought should be given to writing articles for historical journals. I truly appreciate your vote of confidence.

 Thanks!
