What was McCain trying to do when he taunted union members about not being able to pick lettuce for
$50 an hour in Arizona? Is he nuts? Those guys will kick his ass politically for that.

2. First off, he's clueless about real world wages
He probably thought field workers got about $10/Hr, so he GUESSED that $50 would be too much. Little does he know.

And second, which is even MORE disturbing, is that he thinks Americans can't handle really hard work.
That Americans aren't used to it. "You couldn't do it, my friend" I think is the exact quote.

Which is an insult to American citizens who REGULARLY do the hard physical work that keep the country going.

3. Yeah, I Wonder About That
of course, I'm one of those wusses who really couldn't pick lettuce out in the hot sun all summer

But, most politicians praise the American worker as innovative, resourceful, hardworking, etc. I always thought they were just pandering. I guess we ought to give McSame points for honesty - he really thinks American workers are sloths and rather than kiss up, he calls it like he sees it.

Boy, we really need a President like that, eh? :eyes:

8. It is also nearly all harvested mechanically with cutter bars and vacuums.

Workers still have to "walk the fields" to look for foreign objects and animal poop - but hardly anyone picks lettuce by hand anymore. It is simply not cost effective. McCain literally doesn't know wtf he is talking about.

4. Exactly. Has McCain ever worked in the heat wearing a hard hat, safety goggles, work gloves,
overalls and steel toed boots? He doesn't know wtf he is talking about.

6. That "my friend" line of his is starting to wear a little thin also. Particularly when he follows
up an insult with "my friend." Damned irritating and condescending. He ain't your friend when he talks like that. Clueless.

9. oh this one again
he said this again today? This McCain MClassic that actually goes back to April 2006. When he first said it and I first heard it I was working 7 days a week. My wife was ill. I had to have two jobs since she couldn't work. Monday through Friday I'd cram in about 50 hours in my office job. Saturday and Sunday I drove a cab from 4am to 4pm. I was only working about 75 hours a week at the time. But he's got a point. I wasn't picking lettuce in AZ. What an ass.

10. No he didn't say it again today. Another post made it sound like it.. But it wasn't during his
"irresponsible youth phase" either - it was 2 years ago, and hence fair game, imo. You know the pubbies would use it as a wedge issue against Obama or Biden if they had said it in 2006.
