** WALL ST. MELTDOWN - IS THIS A "GAME CHANGER" FOR OBAMA?

Now that Wall St. is officially in "meltdown" mode and Americans are worried sick about their own investments and 401K's ...

Is this the game changer that Obama has been waiting for?

2. I love how Obama tied this meltdown to SS privitization
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 10:40 PM by TheDonkey
McClown wants to put social security in the hands of these banks that are going belly-up? That would be OUR retirement money flushed down the toilet. Want to turn older Americans against McCain? Broadcast this LOUD AND CLEAR.

The market has been on a slide for awhile but it has a Hoover-esque MELTDOWN today. OBAMA/BIDEN MUST CAPITALIZE!

7. People who used to comprise the middle class in this country
and people who are still wage-earners are likely distrustful of the Wall Street crowd.

"And rightly so," they're going to say this week.

Obama has an opportunity to redefine the role of government of, for and by the people -- all the people -- and since his message has been about change all along, the sad collapse of these financial giants provide a setting for Obama's message.

It takes on urgency when people's retirement plans are suddenly felt to be jeopardized and their faith in financial institutions becomes something of a crapshoot.

John Keating 5 McCain has no ground to stand on with this subject.

Advantage Obama.

8. There needs to be a direct connection between the meltdown and McCain
Of course, WE see that McCain has been in lockstep with the de-regulators and SEC-hating "free-marketeers" for the whole of his career.

BUT. There needs to be a simple, easy-to-understand connection that will resonate.

I don't know, but the "Keating 5" scandal may be utilized to draw that parallel.

9. I think his willingness to invest social security into these unregulated investment banks is also
fertile ground to tie the meltdown to mainstreet America.

25. This is a huge point that will absolutely solidify the fact that McLiar is out of touch.
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 10:53 PM by Parker CA
Proposing that the security that many people have as their only "safe" bet should be gambled on the stock market would be an absolutely ridiculous concept at any time, let alone right no amidst the chaos of the crumbling financial sectors in the US.

Obama can take McLiar's economical concepts and hammer them to bits one by one over the next couple days. He must be forceful, direct, and he must find a way to bring this conversation to the brainwashed masses of kool-aid drinkers who think McLiar and Moose are the best thing since the bible. Even some of these people will see the absolute absurdidty in signing onto a concept that would literally put their financial future on red or black while their government just hopes for the best.

Finally, Obama has a chance to address the attention of the entire population rather than just those on the left or those independents and republicans who have become weary of McLiar. Everyone is worried about money and their future. Obama has been handed a perfect opportunity to tilt the scale of this race enormously in his favor.

GO Obama!!! GO Biden!!!

When we talk about the economy - the differences between the two campaigns are as stark as can be.

Its bonus time.

(Boomers and elderly) they may just vote McCain so they can continue to have the government
borrowing to fund their social security and medicare and keep wars and conflict going

The Social Security system is funded primarily by federal taxation of payrolls, moron.

And you do realize you just attacked the majority of DU members?!

Good luck, you're going to need it.

29. well, there is most definitely a generation gap this election year
and, the facts are that Republicans are fairing better with the 60+ demographic, while Democrats are doing well with generation X and Yers. Sure, there are liberal older folks on DU and elsewhere, but their views do not reflect what the majority of their age demographic believes.

That demographic tends to support armed conflict or war, push for tax cuts but still want their services, and are less accepting of people of other ethnicites, religions, and so on. Those are just the facts. And... it's worse in red states like where I'm from. I personally know such people!

Yeah, and calling me a moron isn't cool either pal!!

It knocked Palin off the front page, for today anyway. McCain is getting roughed up by the press, deservedly so of course, and both Obama and Biden are attacking brilliantly. McCain gave him an opening and Obama is jumping on it with both feet.

20. No. Too many "values voters" in this country. Values are race,
fundamental lunes, vote for the "hot chick", vote against Rev. Wright. The world is watching and we've got Mom and Pop losing the farm but content with being distracted by Hannity and Rush. Maybe Rush can loan them a dollar ot buy some beans after they're finally living in their car.

24. possibly
My sister's oldest friend is a Republican. They avoid talking politics and actually, this woman is fairly good-natured. When we canvassed for Kerry in 2004 she let us park in her driveway when we worked her neighborhood and gave us some good-natured ribbing about Kerry.

She doesn't particularly like McCain but would have probably voted for him because she's been a Republican all her life. Tonight, she called my sister and went BALLISTIC about this Wall Street meltdown. She's particularly enraged that the bill for GOP misbehavior won't even be paid off by her children in *their* lifetimes.

This one issue penetrated a Republican skull. My sister didn't ask her if she's still voting for McCain - she doesn't want to push her and knows better - but from the conversation she said she has no doubt that Obama just gained a new vote.

If a lifelong Republican reacted like this, I would guess Independents would be even more pissed. This thing has traction.

28. This is most definitely the game-changer.
And Obama needs to light the fire bigtime, before he loses the shock of the news cycle.

This is it. All aboard the freight train to President Obama.

If Obama lets this go (which I think is about a 1 in 1000 chance), nothing would make him President.
