Say what you will about the Andrew Sullivan of five years ago.
His constant, meticulously researched scorched-earth savaging of the Repukes, day after day, is one of the best sources there is about the depths to which the Repigs have sunk and the unabashed constancy of their lying. I have no idea what changed him so drastically, but he is one of our best journalistic friends here and now.

16. Look genius, I have little tolerance or taste for Repuke type whining of the
"Why do you hate America?" variety.

I don't give a rat's ass about Huffington. I have no opinion of her one way or the other.

As for Sullivan - I'm not gay, but I knew the entire Repuke party consisted of anti-gay bigots for at least several decades.

I'm really happy for Sullivan that he's heard about it somewhere, but the fucker helped create this mess, which has destroyed my fucking country?

Got it?

No?

Well kiss my ass.

He wasn't some passive dupe watching Fox News. On the contrary, he was an activist propagandist for the right.

18. I don't much care when someone becomes an anti-Nazi
only that they become a committed anti-Nazi. That Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg was late to the party makes him no less a hero.

22. helped create this mess? Because he has a blog? Edited a magazine?
really?

I sense some hostility toward Sullivan that I don't see directed to others who "helped create this mess" like Media Matters (hat tip from another post) and Huffington. An excellent argument can be made that each of those republicans did more to create this mess than Sullivan. Brock was much more of an active propagandist, he destroyed Anita Hill. What a guy! And Huffington gave more money to the GOP than any of us will ever see in our lifetimes. (Brock is gay and Ariana a woman, neither group fared well under the GOP but both supported the party.)

So he helped create this mess, at least he has dedicated his blog from not until the election to helping to fix it by showing McCain and Palin unfit for office.

If we don't "welcome" people from the other side, we will continue to lose elections.

Just saying.

My dad was a republican, until Reagan who he thought was an irresponsible war monger. Once he saw the light he was a tireless supporter of all Democrats and the best man who ever lived.

Rather than me kissing your ass, you kiss his.

30. I'm with you NNadir. He's not a Dem, he's not a liberal, he's not
to be trusted. He is against the direction the Republican Party has taken under Bush but if they clean up their act - he will be right back there.

That is not the case with Arianna Huffington or David Brock.

2. Have to admit, Sullivan is really taking it to McCain and the rest of
the whole sorry lot of Republicans.

Strongly worded stuff, too.

I'm please to have his vote for Obama/Biden.

4. I don't think he can vote, he's not a citizen, but I'm delighted to have his voice
he is relentless, as is John Cole at www.balloon-juice.com

Both have been non stop GOP bashing for some time.

23. if so, it happened in the last few weeks, which I highly doubt
he had several posts about a bill which just passed in Congress to get rid of the HIV positive prohibition in the law. Prior to that I don't think he could even get permanent legal resident status which is pretty much necessary before citizenship. Helms passed the original amendment. No one who was HIV positive could immigrate. I'm pretty sure he was here on a work visa which he was able to extended but he was worried he would not be able to do that forever.

He's still a British citizen according to wiki.

25. Ah--I didn't know that. I guess I was just assuming, since he has obviously
settled here and takes such an active (and meddlesome) inttnerest in our elections. He's been pro-Dem since 2004, but he did a lot of damage supporting Republicans before that.

8. me too
He is absolutely HORRIFIED at Palin and the Christianists (as he calls them).

John Cole is great too. He actually changed parties to Dem over the Terry Schiavo SCHIP fiasco. He is just as relentless and often very funny. His comments are good too. Smart readers.

14. The question is ...
Is this an honest conversion, or will he go back to bashing liberals when Obama's president? I don't expect anyone to take a hands off approach, of course, if Obama makes mistakes. As long as people are honest. So will Sullivan be honest?

What is his fiscal philosophy? Some Republicans, or Republican sympathizers turn Democrat and bring their no tax, no spend, no govt intervention mindset into the party.

I don't watch or read him --

HOWEVER . . . people like him who could have done a lot to wake up the right re the damage

the GOP agenda does to the nation were banging the drums for them.

That kind of past can'r & shouldn't be forgotten --

Fence sitting power followers -- following the best opportunity for themselves.

I'd say, drop people like him ...

24. then we will never win the WH
we need converts

how do we do it without them?

Huffington, media matters, Sullivan, John Cole.

While I would never consider voting for someone who recently switched sides, or give him the key to the city, I damn well won't trash him like the right is doing right now.

Check out the right wing sites. They are calling him crazy. It takes some balls to turn on your own.

Read him. Honestly, its not catching. You'll be surprised.

28. Okay. Sully of five years ago was a complete whore.
Sully of today has flip-flopped, but I am beginning to suspect his conversion might at least be partly genuine.

He has a long way to go as far as atonement, but he's on the right track.
