There is no Game Changer...there is no Sudden Revelation
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 12:05 AM by alcibiades_mystery
There is slogging it out, and fifty days worth of it. Pounding pavement, talking to folks, phonebanking, GOTV. That's it. No magical ad campaign will make it a 6 point spread. No debate performance will spread the gap 8 points. Nothing.

No scales dropping from the eyes. No sudden shift to a safe margin. The term paper won't write itself. No Deus ex Machina. No relief from the anxiety until night time, November 4.

That's the way it's going to play. No "Win-the-Election-Quick" moment will get us through. Just work, work, work work and work. So go go go go go. Buck up, stop waiting for a miracle, roll up them sleeves and get to it. Ain't nothin' to it but to do it.

And it will be so much sweeter for that reason. But get goddamn cracking.

1. You just hit "reality check" status!
Thank you--as soon we keep doing what we had been and forget about the celebration party until we CAN celebrate, there is work to be done.

3. Yes. Each and every one of us needs to do as much as we can
possibly do to get Obama into the White House. We need to work 24/7, and occasionally we need to sleep.

If all of us do our very best and give it everything we've got, we WILL win.

4. Yup, yup. Grind it out.
They fling Hail Mary's and play prevent. We smash it up the middle and blitz from ever position.

6. Well said!
There's a new campaign office opening up Wednesday literally across the street from my work - I'll be spending quite a bit of time there over the next few weeks...

8. Post of the Day, sir.
Find 'em, register 'em, and get 'em to the polls.

Better yet, in states with early voting and absentee ballots get that shit done NOW! I always vote in person because I love that whole Election Day feeling, but many people are busy and harried and - let's face it - a bit lazy, so getting their vote in early ensures that it will happen.

9. So the media should go back to obsessing over lipstick and Palin?
At least the narative has actually changed to the ISSUES. We need to continue talking them and get past the fluff that has been rocking the MSM and blogosphere since the RNC.

10. Thank You!
Those threads were scaring the shit out of me.

The set up being the debates would be the game changer.

Something that can be controlled by the media! Fuck that, Dems need to control their own destiny.

11. That's it! It will take sweat equity to bring about change.......
and those thinking there is a shortcut are in for a rude awakening.

Nothing is a given, and anything given can be taken away.
We will have to earn it, and earn it more than most have.
But the rewards will be great, and President Obama will have hella of a mess to clean up.
Thank God he is up for the job.....a job that would be beyond the grasp other most others.

14. If we can peel off the dreamers, and hopers,
and the idiots, and other hangers-on, we might succeed in finally expanding our voting base by paring off all the people who aren't serious for the right reasons, and make the pie higher.

Don't be fooled by false hopesters!

15. "No relief from the anxiety until night time, November 4" -- and even that's not certain
Election turns on disputes over Ohio provisional ballots, U.S. Supreme Court may decide it....

The Electoral College is tied, House Democrats from red states are being heavily pressured....

I'd rather be in our situation than theirs but you're absolutely right that it's not a lock by any means.

16. Work also has very little to do with it
General elections for the presidency are won on preference, not GOTV. This isn't a caucus where one side will show up in decisively greater numbers and staying power than the other side.

Obama can do more with one great debate performance or effective commercial sound bite than tens of thousands of workers could ever manage if they never slept from now through election day.

No one is claiming 6 points or 8 points. It's 2 to 3 points tops. But that's potentially everything.

17. Don't underestimate ground game
getting voters and getting them to the polls is the battle in the trenches and makes the gains from a debate or an effective commercial possible and magnifies them.

First time volunteer-wannabe here. How can us lucky to live in a state that is strong blue help in the toss ups?

23. I live in Illinois
Obama Country, for sure. You can do phone banking or travel to swing states (yeah, I don't really have the time for travel either). You can even do office grunt work, like data entry, to free up other people for projects THEY can do. There's a lot of stuff out there, and the campaign recognizes that not everybody will be on the TOOTH end of the Tail to tooth ratio. But the tail end is crucial, too. Get to your local office and ask them what they need. They definitely need something.
