This shit depresses me -- PPP Poll has Obama down 4 in Ohio
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/yet_another_poll_puts_mccain_u.php

Back in July it was Obama (D) 48%, McCain (R) 40%

WTF? If Obama ends up losing the state in which has invested *massive* resources... :banghead:

sorry for the negative post. I'll stop now :(

1. Polls are based on past election turn out
Between the huge voter registration drives, the GOTV operations and an energized base, that past model will not work.

2. The campaign still hasn't tailored its message to people there.
People are ANGRY there. They need to get those people personally pissed at John McCain. They need to talk about $500 shoes and 7 houses and $50/hour lettuce remarks.

6. or invest more in public education
I had a discussion for 30 mins last night with an aunt who won't vote for Obama because he had the flag on the tail of his jet painted over with his logo ... I shared the facts with her, but she is still convinced he is a muslim (as if that matters). Yeah, and she owes me $3,000.00 because she couldnt pay for her medical bills and was going to go to foreclosure.

Just shoot me now.

12. I don't know PPP's reputation
as a poller. I thought Quinnipiac was considered pretty reliable usually. This is good news then.

4. four points at this stage of the game isn't bad. It's probably within moe.
Stop getting depressed over this poll and look at other polls that show Obama gaining in the daily tracking and also ahead in states like Iowa, Colorado and Virginia.

8. How many times can we ask politely to end these "I'm depressed" "Im worried" threads?
It's counter-productive. I'm trying to be helpful, to keep DU a more productive and positive place. Have you not seen countless replies and threads asking that the proliferation of "I'm worried about this poll.... " threads are to be discouraged?

Polls say things every day and when you're sampling a small group of people that are home to answer their home phones, and you have no idea HOW they sampled, then they're worthless. There are so many polls posted on here that have been researched and found to be nothing more than PR firms hired by Repubs so they can push the results in the media.

Even if the polls are in our favor, we really need to just ignore them. They don't matter. We just need to work hard on the things that matter.

28. Well said. While I don't believe that polls are useless..
they can be and you are correct that they can be counter-productive. I'm over 50 and have never been polled.

11. Remember: RECORD TURNOUT FOR YOUTH & AFRICAN AMERICANS...
are they being polled? Only the African Americans who are consistent voters. The rest are not and they will turn out in record numbers. This potentially could effect states not considered in play.
Until I see that these two critical demographics are being properly polled, I'm not buying that this race is that close.

21. African Americans get serious disenfranchisement, though.
Most states weren't prepared for the record primary season, I question how they may handle a record general election.

23. The repubs target specific states for their dirty tricks
The regular African American voters will fill their friends in to help them avoid the traps. And in many states, the gop dirty trick machine isn't happening, in terms of caging efforts.

20. The present polls are a tribute to all of Mrs. Clinton's
...careful work there and in Pennsylvania and Indiana -- overlapping media markets --this spring, and to her persuasive powers.

She's made a helluva impression. No wonder they don't like Obama.

Thank her for me, if you see her.

24. 400K
400,000+ is a very big sampling for a poll and AOL democraphics are very similar to the US Demographics as a whole... obviously there are differences but when even California and New York are coming up as red states there's something wrong on the home front... I blame racists.

27. interesting take on it
I hadn't thought of that angle.

Should be interesting to see if Hillary now goes to PA and tries to reverse all her earlier comments about Obama. Might ring hollow if she tries.

29. Hillary Clinton's fault? Bullshit.....? Just my opinion. And......
The only good polls are the polls showing your candidate with an insurmountable lead? More bullshit.

Put your suicide kit away and pay attention: The polls are manipulated by the pollsters to guarantee fixation on their product. Sure looks like they are succeeding.

Stay wise to this crap. Very wise.
