One of my best friends is a McSame supporter...or was. She's also really big on animal rights, so has been turned off by Palin. But she refuses to go for Obama because of the abortion issue *sigh*, so she's sitting this one out (well for now, at least). She's not a racist, though. I don't think all McSame supporters or even all conservatives in general are, although there is, undoubtedly, an element of them that are...and that's disturbing, no matter how small the number. However, I think we should be careful not to broaden the stroke of that brush TOO widely because there are exceptions...

My good friend Pam & her husband. Both staunch republicans (fiscal - not so much on the social issues). She's one of my closest friends, but we just totally disagree on politics. I don't hold it against her.
And, she's absolutely not racist at all - in fact if anything Obama being black made her think for a second about voting for him because she'd like to see a minority in the white house some day (She'd love for Powell to run). But, she went back to the issues, and in her mind she's closer with McCain.

pre-emptive war for oil, destroy constitutional rights, force rape victims to bear the fetus until birth, want to impose their religion on others, denigrate and destroy those with less power in society, justify corporate welfare but oppose providing food to poor children and be A DECENT PERSON? I don't think that is possible. Everyone who answered that cons can be non-racist seem to want to be able to justify their continued relationship with a hateful friend or relative. Talk about cognitive dissonance.

It always surprises them to learn that their viewpoints are much more liberal when they do consider social issues, but I don't know how many minds I've changed.

or registering voters, when I've talked to people who say they would NEVER vote for him, I do sense a real nasty hatred. Every last one of them is white, and they look like something in them is about to explode. Could easily be racism, whether they admit it to themselves or not.
I get the feeling that some white conservative people are afraid that, as a group, they're losing control of this country and their lives. Fact is, they probably are. But they don't know who to blame, so they focus their fear and their rage at the wrong people.

We can't go about this election with the attitude that all McCain supporters are racists. If that were so why even have a campaign. There are a certain amount of people that will never vote for a black man. But what we have to focus on is the majority who are not racists and can be convinced to support Obama on a myriad a rational issues.

78. I've lived in Arkansas for over 40 years. Most of the Republicans I talk |
|
to are likely to be single issue voters, mainly abortion, taxes or national security. They are also likely to be pretty much low information voters who don't examine the issues too closely and many just echo the views of the church. This is not to say that racism doesn't exist in Arkansas, but I don't think that is the main reason for McCain's support here.

Secret or not being Muslim shouldn't come out of anyone's mouth as a reason to not vote for someone if they don't expect to be called out (properly) as a racist.

The same way you'd call an anti-Semite a bigot I'm calling out someone who considers being Muslim a slur a bigot. There is no difference. It is not acceptable to say that someone is a secret Muslim as a slur against them. Not caring what color the practitioner of a religion is does not make you any less of a bigot than the idiot who will say how much they dislike someone of a certain race.

Republican...not so much.
Its not about racism especially, though I'm certain that plays a part, but to me it has got beyond disagreement on paths to a common goal and the Republicans have been perverted to a group of rogues who want to dismantle the government, establish theocracy, and/or wage wars to secure trade/resources.
I have trouble reconciling these things with being a good soul. Ignorant, brainless, or insanely misguided, I can buy to a degree but I'm certainly running out of patience with proven bull. The Republicans need a trip to the wilderness because they are utterly out of touch with the needs of the nation. They are the country club first party, and even those folks should be getting antsy by now.

I know two people (possibly 4 if their wives are McCain supporters as well). AFAIK, they are not racist, they are young and following in their parents footsteps. As far as they're concerned, it's as simple as that. They are not interested in learning about Obama OR McCain, they've made their decision and that's that, end of story.
I'll be working on my friends from now until November, trust me.
On a lighter note, I know the parents of one of those friends and they are both voting for Obama (lifelong republicans). That to me is very very good news :)

Looked like a mini van full of Mormons. Didn't talk to them, but if I had, I probably would have asked them how they could still vote for McCain after the way he dissed Willard Brigham Mittens Joseph Elohim Romney in favor of the wolf slaughtering mayor of Bridge to Nowhere Alaska.

Why should I have to think long and hard about the answer?
So sorry you live in a closed-minded community. I don't. But there is a lot of political ignorance here.

101. I do not believe that EVERY town has a lot of racism. |
|
Some towns have a lot, some not so much. My quibble with the OP is the underlying message that someone who votes for McCain is, by definition, racist. I just had a frank discussion with someone yesterday who is voting for McCain because he honestly thinks, all things considered, that McCain is the better candidate (*ugh*). So I eventually steered the conversation to the subject of Colin Powell, and the first words out of his mouth were, "Damn, I wish Powell were running, I would rather vote for him than anyone else."
By the way, this guy I was talking to defines himself as a conservative. I told him his party better start conserving things, then, instead of blowing everything away. He agreed.

who thought mcsame palin was just great, and when I expressed shock and disgust at palin's dissing of community organizers (quite a few of my friends are community organizers) - they started snickering and openly mocking me. They were tanned, elegant, and obviously quite wealthy. And as smug as could be.
Nice people, 'eh? :sarcasm:

A lot of Republicans think "taxes, taxes, taxes" and that's all they can wrap their heads around. The world can be crashing around them. As long as their taxes don't go up that's all they care about. And they keep voting for Republicans because they think Republicans = low taxes.

because they've heard her say some vile things about minorities when she's among just white people, says to me (black manager), I'm voting McCain/Palin because I'm afraid someone will shoot Obama and that would break my heart. I wouldn't want anything to happen to him because it would ruin race relations in this country and erase all our progress.
So, she's voting Repub for Obama's safety..lmao!
I don't discuss it with her, just let her speak her peace, not worth it, especially since I'm her manager. I think it kills her because I don't respond, just move on to football or the weather, or her workload.

In my experience with McCain supporters I know they are either: 1. Ignorant and out of touch with reality. 2. Work in the oil and gas business. (unfortunately 3 of my family members own or work for the evil oil/gas companies) 3. Just don't give a ship about anyone but themselves and they think that McCain would be good for them. (also reference #1)
And none of the McCain supporters I know are racists.

Many are ex-military, some are one-issue voters. I don't know of a single one personally whom I'd call racist.
If we keep up shit like this, we'll find a way to lose. Supporting McCain is a sign of stupidity, not racism. If Hillary had won the nomination, would your post have read "Be honest: have you met a single non-chauvinist McCain supporter?"
Right now, lots of Repugs will stay home because they don't like McCain; some whom I know call him "McAmnesty." Telling these would-be non-voters that anyone who supports him is a racist is a sure way to get them out of their lounge chairs and to the polls. If I were on the fence, even I'd consider voting for McCain just to spite idiocy like yours. Just try telling people who are already afraid of years and years of the race card that failure to support Obama is racism, and we could lose this.
By the way, the McCain supporters you know - have they all shown overt racism that you can describe, or is it just that they're not on our side and our candidate is black?

Hmm, come to think of it... in my opinion the Religious freaks count as racists too... since all us non-fanatics must be a different race from the Jesoids (Burn In Hell-ists?...), judging by the way we're deemed to be second class citizens by most of them..
Ohh yeah, and all youse who get defensive when the subject comes up... I really gotta wonder what's the problem.

Tied to McCain because of Palin's anti-choice creds. He's a die-hard devout Catholic. Even after I pointed out that voting Palin is voting Pentecost, it didn't matter. Life is life and it should be preserved no matter what. Anybody who is pro-choice is against Jesus. His head is so turned around right now I weep for him. Really, and I'm an atheist.
He dislikes Bush, can't stand the war and is deeply opposed to it. He'd be on our side if it weren't for Palin's fundie creds. He's a nice guy, wouldn't hurt a fly and gives everybody an even shake no matter who or what they are.

|
is a racist, you are just dead wrong. I don't like the McCain/Palin ticket, and I don't like how their campaign is being run, but to argue that only racists support them is beyond stupid. The "racist" percentage in this country is perhaps 15% of the populace.
