Tweety just said: McCain bought licenses to play songs in 2007
Tweety listed 4 songs whose artists are pissed at him, and want him to stop using their music, at his events. A song I don't know, Right Now, Our Country, and Barracuda.

Does this mean he had selected Sarah Palin back in 2007? Sure was more than enough time to vet.

3. I just find it odd he'd pick Barracuda

4. The fee allows public use of all Heart songs if they joined ASCAP.
Of course they did, since it delivers a check in the sisters' mailbox every month, but I doubt Palin wants it to become an issue on the news every night how much the Wilson sisters support Obama.

6. Geez.. so back in '07 when she had only 8 months experience as a mayor??? BUT
It would make sense.. Troopergate wouldn't have happened.. and her daughter (and Palen herself) wouldn't have been pregnant.

Perhaps he vetted her then.. put it on the back burner, then grabbed and ran before he re-checked her.

Or he just likes the stupid Barraccuda song. Ehh.. i'm thinking that's more likely.

7. I'm going with the "He really likes the barraccuda song" theory..
because back in '07 he was polling like 4th or 5th.. half of his campaign had left, and he couldn't (at that point) seriously had thought he had a shot at winning the Republican nomination - let alone actually thought who his VP pick would be (and bypass all thouse in front of him - Romney, Ghouliani, Huckleberry, etc.)

Coincidence at most.

Vice President Palin?

A new blog is pitching Gov. Sarah Palin as a potential running mate for presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani.

‘What’s the president’s reaction?’

AUGUST 15, 2007 - 11:36 AM

Les Kinsolving, a talk show host in Baltimore, raves on Worldnetdaily.com about Gov. Sarah Palin. More talk of Palin for V.P.

What’s noteworthy is he says he asked a White House spokesman about her poll numbers.

2. I'm sure he means ASCAP fees
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 04:53 PM by JohnnyRingo
The same fees paid by bars, radio stations, and disc jockeys to play copy-written music. The fees are based on percieved audience size.

ASCAP takes the money and distributes it thinly over all licensed holders of the music, and keeps a healthy cut for itself. My local tavern owner pays over $1,000/year to own a jukebox. I'm sure the Repub party is paying a strong multiple of that for the right to use protected music at rallies.

I don't know that it allows a candidate to use any licensed song as a trademark or an endorsement, but it can be argued that since the fees are paid, it's like playing a song during a concert warm up for a different band, or through the PA at any sporting event.

I would imagine that once an artist asks a candidate to cease and desist, it's in their better interest to comply because since the artist owns the song, the words can be changed and the artist can find motivation to seek public revenge, like John Hall did in 2004.

Often it's best not to offend and make waves.

10. What was his revenge? Running for Congress?
I've never read his Wiki entry - thanks for the link, and the ASCAP info.

13. His revenge was taking out a secure Republican seat in '04
Beating her in even her home county. I'm sure it was viewed as a payback to Rove.

Hahahaha... Now we know why they quit playing Springsteen and Mellencamp songs when they're told to.

8. Palin said that she was chosen as VP in Trig's birth announcement
... in April of this year.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=103&topic_id=380819&mesg_id=380823

But in 2007, Palin WAS considered by Guiliani for HIS campaign and she knew it. So yes, I'd say this was planned by that "contingent" for that long. She did a Newsweek story with Gov. Napolitano of AZ in March, which it's clear was beginning her "name recognition", and then of course the internet advocacy for her.

She knew this was coming. (That's why she covered up whatever she covered up about her and/or Bristol's pregnancy.) This IS Palin prepared. She has had time.

14. My pleasure - thanks for reading it.
Yes, that little bit didn't quite "catch on" to wide notice. Yet.

There's also the fact that Palin and her Lt. Gov. are backed by the Club for Growth. Now what does THAT tell us about McC's economic intentions?

There are a mixed bag of such tidbits in my Journal by now fwiw. Things move so fast here.

16. I talked to Tom Petty's Lawyer today......
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 07:59 PM by Bennyboy
and he turned me on to this article http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13477.html

And he told me that they do not need to ask for permission. All they have to do is pay the fees and they (ANYONE) can use it if the song is BMI or ASCAP.

And that is why the artists are coming out (Petty will tommorow I think) to condemn the mcCain camp from using their songs. By saying for them not to use them, legally they can, but if the artist says not too, then morally they are shamed ito not using it. Of course this is the McCain campaign so morally I imagine they don't give a shit.
