As a white young-to-middle-aged professional male, I like "Obama the Professor" the most |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 07:28 PM by Bread and Circus
I'm listening to Obama's economic speech from earlier today and I'm really enjoying it in a deep way. Perhaps a lot of people like the more emotional tone he often employs to whip up the crowds but I really enjoy the common sense, plain spoken-ness, and extremely high intelligence coming through.
Am I off base or should Obama continue to be so detailed, clear, and practical?

with Barack Obama! I want him in the oval office working on cleaning up the mess he will inherit from the 'straight talkers' of America.

Obama can't speak is a talking point that came out yesterday. Some professor somewhere wrote an article, in counterpunch I think. I see Twitty picked it up tonight.
That was a terrific speech that hit McCain on all the very important issues that the media apparently thinks we're too stupid to follow.

I can't find the particular article, it was something about teaching Obama to speak. Here's a couple of other hits on his speaking style. Goes to show no matter what Democrats do, it'll never be good enough. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/diane-francis/does-obama-speak-american_b_119927.htmlhttp://speechworks.net/wordpress/?p=229

5. Well, he's not really fluent in "Moron," this is true. Unlike, say, Bill Clinton, who really spoke |
|
the lingo when the situation called for it. He may have to dumb it down a little to reach people who only want to comprehend soundbites. But I'm with you. Give me a president I'm in awe of any day of the week.

7. He was pretty intense about getting this message out today. |
|
And then I hear Chris Matthews lament that he wasn't pounding the podium. I enjoyed hearing more specifics on his economic plan. I felt he was not only addressing middle America, but also the upper middle class professionals who might want to know what kind of plan he has. They lost money yesterday (and today), too.

I wonder what the internal polls show. I wish a focus group was run on his speech today. It was almost like his "race" speech.

10. I think that we've gone so long with a rhetorically bankrupt President |
|
that so many people are confused at how to take this intelligent, well-spoken gentleman that is Barack Obama. They think we have to dumb him down to appeal to "reg'lar" folks. As if doing that this late in the game wouldn't be an obvious ploy.
For what it's worth, I agree with you completely.

|
But remember, I'm an old fart, and damaged, too, because I loved listening to John Kerry speak. He engaged my mind the same way Obama does. I want my country back! I want the proverbial bar to be raised to lofty heights, is that too much to ask?

the final verdict on an economic philosophy that has completely failed
John McCain cannot be trusted to reestablish proper oversight of our financial markets for one simple reason: he has shown time and again that he does not believe in it.
And really, every one of these sentences would be a great sound byte. We have to stop letting the media get away with their lies too. There isn't a person in the country that wouldn't understand this, from 8 - 80.
"What has happened these last eight years is not some historical anomaly, so we know what to expect if we try these policies for another four. When lobbyists run your campaign, the special interests end up gaming the system. When the White House is hostile to any kind of oversight, corporations cut corners and consumers pay the price. When regulators are chosen for their disdain for regulation and we gut their ability to enforce the law, then the interests of the American people are not protected. It’s an ideology that intentionally breeds incompetence in Washington and irresponsibility on Wall Street, and it’s time to turn the page. Just today, Senator McCain offered up the oldest Washington stunt in the book – you pass the buck to a commission to study the problem. But here’s the thing ... we know how we got into this mess. What we need now is leadership that gets us out. I’ll provide it, John McCain won’t, and that’s the choice for the American people in this election."

I listened to it on the way home from work and found myself driving slower so I could hear more of it. I can't imagine how anyone could listen to that speech and not vote for Obama - the smart candidate

he needs to shorten his answers for the people who can't follow long answers or don't have time or need sound bites to use for convincing their co-workers etc.

19. The 'professor' word will remind a lot of President Bartlet |
|
of West Wing, an economics PhD. People really identify with the characters in shows they like. I'm sure a lot would like him in charge right now ; )
Obamam needs to emphasize that he was a professor more between now and the election to capitalize on that parallel even though the majors were the same. The level of education is what counts.

23. Remember when the meme was that he was all rhetoric and no details? |
|
This speech was perfect. He told us that the economy is screwed, he told us why the economy is screwed, and then he gave specifics on how he would fix it.
He also through some digs against McShame and some repeatable sound bites (enough is enough).
What else can one ask for? It was a marvelous speech. I think this one is right up there with his speech on race.
