Defenders Of Wildlife "Wolves" Ad Against Palin ACTUALLY WORKS!!!
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 10:43 PM by slinkerwink
That was the headline from the latest focus group results from Media Curves, an organization that studies public reaction to political ads and speeches.

See below the fold for more on why 25% of the focus group was "angry" and another 30% were "disturbed" about Palin's conservation record after viewing the following ad. Media Curves conducted a focus group with 312 Democrats, Republicans and Independents and found that after viewing the ad:

"there was moderate movement among all parties toward Barack Obama."

Media Curves CEO, Glenn Kessler, went on to say that:

"The ad which focuses on Governor Palin's record regarding the treatment of wildlife in Alaska seemed to strike a chord with voters. The recent ads from both parties have had little impact among voters. This is the first ad in over a month that seems to have broken through."

Take a look at that quote again. According to the focus group, this ad has more impact than McCain's "lipstick on a pig" or Obama's ads on McCain's lobbyist ties. You know what that tells me? This is an issue we need to get out there to voters ASAP!

This issue obviously tugs at the heart strings and indicates how bad the McCain/Palin ticket will be for the environment and wildlife.

After watching the ad, 25% of the focus group characterized themselves as angry, including 36% of Democrats, 15% of Republicans and 26% of Independents. 16% of the group responded with "sadness" and 29% were disturbed, including 31% of Democrats, 26% of Republicans and 29% of Independents. 22% also viewed the ad with skepticism.

What was even more surprising to me was that the ad helped Obama achieve a Political Communications Impact Score (PCIS) of 23.3, which is a metric that illustrates the change of voters' perception on each candidate. The higher the score, the more indication of a shift in voter support, and the better for the candidate. So in this case, the ad was very effective in shifting voter support. In comparison, McCain's sex education ad only received a PCIS score of 4.8 and Obama's "More of the Same" ad only ranked a 3.2.

96. You can take the lipstick out of Palin, but you can't take the.. no.. wait.
Just because you slap a Palin up against the wall doesn't mean that it will stay.. no.. that ain't it.

Try this: You can smear a Palin with lipstick but it's still a Palin.

How many Palins does it take to abstain in a lightbulb?
Answer: What time is it? 4:41 P.M.??? No further questions.

11. I finally went and watched the ad.....
I knew that instead of just disliking her immensely after watching it I would hate her. Anyone who can champion such cruelty must surely espouse other disgustingly twisted views. It makes me think that there is a really high chance that if she could, she'd do the same to Iraqis, Afghanis, surely Iranians, and more than likely Russians and Jews as well. No wonder this ad breaks through. As soon as I can afford to, I'm going to donate more to help air that ad.

Kick this.

22. If the ad just keeps some Republicans home, it's done its job
Republicans don't have to make the switch to Obama. They just have to feel angry and disgusted enough to not vote for Palin and stay at home instead. This ad should be seen far and wide and, right up to the time of election day, it will continue shocking some Republicans.

24. Thank God! At last!
The Dems have finally gone viseral!!! They lose again and again and again because they stay "in the head" and virtuously stick with the facts and issues. And who cares about the effin' issues? Not the American people. This ad is not about animal rights or meat eaters or vegetarians or even Palin. It's a viseral, purely emotional glimpse through the chink in the armor of Republican cruelty: their Guantanamo, Abu Gharib, water-boarding, tax cuts for the wealthiest, and their never-ending disregard for what they deem lesser beings. It's a little window, if you will. God bless these animal rights activists. They've done what no Dem has done since Johnson ran the daisey ad. Whatever, it takes. Now get out your check book and keep this ad on the air because it is NOT ABOUT PALIN. It says worlds more than mere words in a way that no rational, reasonable ad can. And best of all, it doesn't put you to sleep. Because politics, no matter how dire and evil the men in power, is basically "in one ear and out the other." Yada, yada. It's 24 hour noise, or, excuse me: zzzzzzzzzzzzz!!! But this ad, I will never forget...

I posted this comment on Kos and The Field. I also gave $20 today... and will give more. Let's keep this ad on the air!

82. Absolutely - animals lovers will always unite
...across platforms for the welfare of our feathered, furry, and scaled friends.

Aerial hunting is no sport...chasing an animal in the wide open to the point of its exhaustion so you can shoot it & watch it writhe in sheer agony until its death...so you can severe its foreleg for $150. Jesus - that doesn't even pay for the airplane rental or fuel.

I love this ad, because as someone else noted it's a 1-2 punch. It takes down the Palin legend but more importantly it shines a spotlight on a worthwhile cause and organization.

This needs to be played from coast to coast, especially in the midwest.

I first saw this fantastic ad a couple of days ago, and thought maybe this is the one that will induce the visceral reaction we've all been hoping for. And this very large focus group proves. Now we have to get the word out so this can be the 527 ad everyone remembers from 2008.

So keep on donating and kick this to the top of DU!

Don't know if anyone answered your post. You can Digg it from youtube. Click on the youtube website in the article, when in youtube click either digg or share then digg; (can't remember which it is). I know that last time I checked youtube the video had been viewed 179,000 times. I also think possibly digg'd already, but do it anyway. If it's already on Digg, it will tell you it's a duplicate and you can see how many people rated it or commented.

56. Chief Seattle's thoughts...
Chief Seattle's Thoughts (ca. 1851) in response to a proposed treaty under which the Indians were persuaded to sell two million acres of land for $150,000

How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land? The idea is strange to us.

If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?

Every part of this earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing and humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of my people. The sap which courses through the trees carries the memories of the red man.

The white man's dead forget the country of their birth when they go to walk among the stars. Our dead never forget this beautiful earth, for it is the mother of the red man. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters; the deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadows, the body heat of the pony, and man --- all belong to the same family.

So, when the Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land, he asks much of us. The Great Chief sends word he will reserve us a place so that we can live comfortably to ourselves. He will be our father and we will be his children.

So, we will consider your offer to buy our land. But it will not be easy. For this land is sacred to us. This shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you the land, you must remember that it is sacred, and you must teach your children that it is sacred and that each ghostly reflection in the clear water of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father.

The rivers are our brothers, they quench our thirst. The rivers carry our canoes, and feed our children. If we sell you our land, you must remember, and teach your children, that the rivers are our brothers and yours, and you must henceforth give the rivers the kindness you would give any brother.

We know that the white man does not understand our ways. One portion of land is the same to him as the next, for he is a stranger who comes in the night and takes from the land whatever he needs. The earth is not his brother, but his enemy, and when he has conquered it, he moves on. He leaves his father's grave behind, and he does not care. He kidnaps the earth from his children, and he does not care. His father's grave, and his children's birthright are forgotten. He treats his mother, the earth, and his brother, the sky, as things to be bought, plundered, sold like sheep or bright beads. His appetite will devour the earth and leave behind only a desert.

I do not know. Our ways are different than your ways. The sight of your cities pains the eyes of the red man. There is no quiet place in the white man's cities. No place to hear the unfurling of leaves in spring or the rustle of the insect's wings. The clatter only seems to insult the ears. And what is there to life if a man cannot hear the lonely cry of the whippoorwill or the arguments of the frogs around the pond at night? I am a red man and do not understand. The Indian prefers the soft sound of the wind darting over the face of a pond and the smell of the wind itself, cleaned by a midday rain, or scented with pinon pine.

The air is precious to the red man for all things share the same breath, the beast, the tree, the man, they all share the same breath. The white man does not seem to notice the air he breathes. Like a man dying for many days he is numb to the stench. But if we sell you our land, you must remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports.

The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also receives his last sigh. And if we sell you our land, you must keep it apart and sacred as a place where even the white man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow's flowers.

So we will consider your offer to buy our land. If we decide to accept, I will make one condition - the white man must treat the beasts of this land as his brothers.

I am a savage and do not understand any other way. I have seen a thousand rotting buffaloes on the prairie, left by the white man who shot them from a passing train. I am a savage and do not understand how the smoking iron horse can be made more important than the buffalo that we kill only to stay alive.

What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of the spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected.

and I'm really stoked to see they've targeted Palin! I'll kick in some $ soon!

They targeted Pombo - gone

They targeted lead bullets in California Condor range - gone

61. Wasn't there a HUGE thread on here about how it would backfire?
I have vague memories of that. How the ad would play into Palin's "Strong Frontier Woman" persona and undermine the Obama campaign.

Guess not.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I have Defenders of Wildlife checks with wolves on them...)

72. Backlash?
I wondered the same thing (about possible backlash). However, the ad is very well done to show how inhumane and downright gruesome these acts are. I'm not a hunter or a supporter of those acts. However, the true sportsmen (and sportswomen) that I know are not insulted by this ad - in fact, they object to Palin's proposals as well as it gives the sport of hunting a hugely negative connotation. Also, the true hunters look down at this garbage: hunting is person versus nature (with some clearly defined rules and rituals) rather than person in helicopter versus nature. To them, her proposals make it "amateur hour" and ultimately they end up shooting themselves (hello, mr. vice president...).

All the hunters I know absolutely despise the practice of aerial hunting. They consider it to be unsportsmanlike.

115. I think people overestimate how much hunters matter in the scheme of things anyway politically.
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 11:28 PM by Pithlet
I know I'll get dinged for that by the hunters on DU. I'm not anti-hunting. My dad and other family members hunt. But they really are a minority, and they don't just vote on that one issue. Most people in America don't hunt, and most don't really know all that much about it or care in the scheme of things. I knew this ad was bad for the McCain camp. Bending over backwards for fear of what the hunters think would have been horrible politically.

77. I've been telling people since the ad was first shown here
Donate! Get this out there! Both Republicans and apathetic voters will be receptive. Nobody, and I mean nobody can stand to see an animal in so much pain as depicted in this ad. No sane hunter would approve of such techniques, even if they approve of killing predators (most don't).

Also be sure to share the following facts.

- Alaskans have voted against aerial hunting three times, and yet, well, there it is.
- The purpose of the wolf kills is to "protect the caribou" - out of state trophy hunters believe wolves kill the big, impressive caribou. In fact, wolf and bear predation is the key to havinmg big, impressive caribou.
- Rather than utilize the Alaskan Department of Fish and Game to control the population, Palin hired on private hunters to do it, allowing them trophies from the kills in addition to bounties.

She's a governor who's defied the will of her state in order to appease the big-bucks out of state trophy hunters. Why? Because she's one of them

Push that. Especially to those you know who hunt. Most hunters I've met, left, right, apolitical, all think trophy hunting is a waste, shameful, and elitist. And there she is with a bearskin couch throw.

Last week my friends over there were worried that McCain/Palin were going to pull ahead. Everyone who has seen this ad says they hope it gets played far and wide across the country. One said "Anyone who advocates such savagery to animals is capable of advocating likewise horrors on their fellow man -- and enjoy it."

Keep this K&R!!!

84. The last word in ignorance
is the person who says of a plant or animal: "What good is it?" If the land mechanism as a whole is good, then every part is good, whether we understand it or not. If the biota, in the course of eons, has built something we like but do not understand, then who but a fool would discard seemingly useless parts? To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering.
-Aldo Leopold

It would seem then, that Sarah Palin is both ignorant and foolish.

than any other I've ever read on DU. Not only am I a serious animal lover but I so value their lives. I know I sound weird but I believe animals have as much right to this world as we do. I believe they have souls also and until we realize the significance that God has given them, we will be the losers in this life. I just started a non-profit organization to help animals needing medical and other physical care that their care-takers can't afford. (I actually am trying to model it after Obama's grassroot drive and appeal.) It's in the beginning stages but I've incorporated and set up the website this past weekend. It's something I've thought of for a long time. I just couldn't put any of the horrible pictures of serious ill or damaged animals on the website. Those pic.s disturb me so much. I wonder if it can have the same impact if the pictures are not dire ones. The issue is important to me and I'm glad to hear it is to others too. I'm so proud of my fellow DUers.

92. Remember on her big night at the convention I said America despises a MEAN woman
in a position of power. All the GOP had to do was keep her from looking mean. They failed. Karl Rove has no experience packaging a woman political candidate. He thought he could do this the same way he did W.

They are also failing their second test---make her sound as intelligent as she looks. When you call a male politician stupid (W. or Reagan) voters do not care, because people secretly think that white men are all smart enough. But they secretly think that white women (not Black women) are all dumb. So, the SNL sketch hurt Palin, because voters assume Palin is dumb until proven otherwise---even if she is a brunette with glasses.

The Obama campaign should take notes from it. It's a provocative ad that elicits an emotional response from the viewer. The eliciting emotional responses from the viewer is what Dem political campaign ads miss. Need to get voters who don't go do campaign events emotionally involved in the issues.
