A couple of days ago I opined the chattering negativity about the trend of this election, and the closeness of the polls, given the clarity of the choice to be made. I am reading and posting less on DU, have contributed my financial limit to the campaign, and volunteered at our local Obama office here in Virginia. What a difference!
I have talked to people, on the phone, from all over Virginia, and even when you cannot convince people to switch, you can convince them that the opposition is thoughtful and patriotic and deflate some of the vitriol. Independents do not have as much information as you think. People are busy, and do not have the time or inclination to follow everything. They welcome someone to talk through the issues, and it seems to make such a difference! One woman related to me that a phone call from a real person is so refreshing, and that she would think about the things I said, and read the papers, and see how the distractions are meant to blur the distinction to be made.
I am still going to do less on line chatter, and volunteer more, but some people asked me to check in and relate my experiences. I am optimistic about Virginia, but also realistic in seeing the barriers that people put up, and the effect of closed-mindedness, and bigotry.
I came back on line, and watched the 2 minute Obama ad. It reminds me of what this is all about...wow...
I watched the McCain response, with all the certainty and resolve, and unthinking anger, and I am more motivated than ever...going to see Michelle Obama and Jill Biden today, and will canvas tonight after my kids soccer practice. My teenage son wants to come along...
Sorry for the ramble, but I wanted to report that for me, the minute by minute on line experience made me lose some of the forest for the trees. Donations help, but there is nothing like going out and trying to make a difference.
Keep the faith, and work your asses off. If you live in a solid red or blue state, phone bank for the swing states...I want to get this done and move on because there is even more to be done with changing things after we win. Cheers, Sulawesi
