to hold a fundraiser during this downturn in the economy. They're all repeating McCain's line, but in the form of a (repeated) question. :eyes:

1. Meanwhile, McCain just raised millions cavorting with folks on Wall St.
I think Obama's fundraiser is far more benign.

8. So ... fundraising during an economic downturn is off-limits?
Fine. Just as long as McCain follows those same rules.

Note to MSM: Celebrities and the so-called "Hollywood elite" are American citizens. They have a right to talk about political and social issues, just like everyone else. They have a right to participate in the political process, just like everyone else. They have a right to donate money to the candidate of their choice, just like everyone else.

His celebrity supporters are just as American as Joe Blow and hold the same voting privileges and concerns, so the question is unnecessary and exclusionary.

19. From another thread ...
The co-host of a recent top-dollar fundraiser for Sen. John McCain oversaw the payment of roughly $1.7 million to a Colombian paramilitary group that is today designated a terrorist organization by the United States.

Carl H. Lindner Jr., the billionaire Cincinnati businessman, was CEO of Chiquita Brands International from 1984 to 2001, and remained on the company's board of directors until May 2002. Beginning under his tenure, Chiquita executives paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (known by the Spanish acronym AUC), which is described by George Washington University's National Security Archive as an "illegal right-wing anti-guerrilla group tied to many of the country's most notorious civilian massacres."

...

Late last week, Lindner co-hosted a $25,000-per-person fundraiser for McCain and the Republican Party in the wealthy Indian Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. The event raised about $2 million; Lindner also serves on McCain's Ohio Victory Team.

This is about a MILLION times more damaging than some Hollywood celebrities.

21. But you have to admit that
for a campaign that prides itself on having raised tons of money from small donors via the internet, it sure looks a little strange to be holding a $28,000/plate dinner with Hollywood glitterati just when Wall Street collapses and is threatening to take down mainstreet at the same time. When Obama turned down public financing he rather self-righteously said:

From the very beginning of this campaign, I have asked my supporters to avoid that kind of unregulated activity and join us in building a new kind of politics - and you have. Instead of forcing us to rely on millions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs, you've fueled this campaign with donations of $5, $10, $20, whatever you can afford. And because you did, we've built a grassroots movement of over 1.5 million Americans. We've won the Democratic nomination by relying on ordinary people coming together to achieve extraordinary things.

How much you want to bet these words get juxtaposed with his 28,000/plate dinner invitation in a McCain ad?

Is the message supposed to be that millions from "special interests" and lobbyist have a corrupting influence on politics but millions from hollywood movie stars and their brethren isn't so corrupting?

Is the idea that it is okay to take millions from some rich people -- the Democratic leaning fat cats, maybe -- but not okay to take millions from other rich people -- the Republican leaning fat cats?

The only difference was he only attracked the D-listers like Gerald McRaney and Wilford Brimley, and didn't raise as much money. Bush and Cheney held so many private $20,000-a-plate fundraisers, they made an art form and instead of celebrities, they had big oil guys and lobbyists.
