Poll: McCain, Obama virtually tied in battleground states
Posted: 04:06 PM ET

From From CNN Deputy Political Director Paul Steinhauser

A new poll out Wednesday shows a virtually tied race between Sens. McCain and Obama in key states.
Florida: Obama 48, McCain 48
Indiana: McCain 51, Obama 45
North Carolina: McCain 48, Obama 47
Ohio: Obama 49, McCain 47
Wisconsin: Obama 50, McCain 47

WASHINGTON (CNN) — New polls in five battleground states that could decide the presidency suggest the battle for the White House between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama remains a dead heat.

The CNN/Time Magazine/Opinion Research Corp. polls, out Wednesday, indicate that the race for Florida, and its 27 electoral votes, is tied up.

Florida ultimately decided the 2000 election between then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush and then-Vice President Al Gore. Four years ago President Bush won the Sunshine State by 5 points over Sen. John Kerry.

3. Only 6 points back in Indiana?
Daaaamn. I mean, it'll never happen, but it's encouraging nonetheless.

12. It's almost as important
to force mccain to spend money in a state that should be a very safe one for him. I never get to see any political ads as I am in New York. No reason to spend the money here. With the money advantage that Sen Obama has, forcing mccain to spend is a very, very good thing.

23. I'm a Missourian-turned-New Yorker.
:hi:

Though I have to say, after being here for almost a month, it's quite a relief to be so free from constant barrages of campaign commercials. :)

24. Fair warning
This will change with about 3 weeks till the election. You'll start seeing national ads but the local races get a lot of attention.

And I hope I'm not too late to say, welcome to New York. You're going to love it here. Unless I was leaving the country all together, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

29. Thanks!
I can't lie, the scenery every day is absolutely stunning (I'm upstate) after spending most of my life in the comparative flatness of the Midwest. :hi:

And hey, Missouri has been getting campaign commercials since the beginning of the year. The three weeks near the end is nothing, comparatively. :)

32. Wait until the fall foliage is in full force
It will take your breath away. I can only imagine the amount of ads seen in a swing state - we're very lucky in that sense. You're going to love living in a true blue state although upstate is a bit purple. Have you made it to the city yet?

I had kind of given up on IN and NC. That's awesome.

I always felt like my home state (FL) would come around eventually though. B-)

another poll out of Wisconsin. It's been over a month.

Overall, those look good for us. There is a real divide on the outcome in my home state of NC, though.

We've been calculating all the scenarios on how to win this thing without Ohio and Florida... but if we take just one of those, it's game over.

Looks like NC might just turn blue.

Barr has some good numbers here and I am sure that is drawing people away from McCain.

21. I don't want to be overconfident and yet
I believe that the best approach to win the election, and perhaps even more importantly to put the country back on the right track, is to start trying to absorb, incorporate and welcome our republican citizens in the Obama fold. Just act like we are going to win for sure all the time, and don't be snotty about it -- be gracious. Acknowledge that the other person really does want the best for America, and then gently disagree if you must. (I am not saying that this needs to be our candidate's approach, just our approach as we discuss politics with friends and family.)

Just walk around knowing that the change you started back when I was supporting HRC, is coming and the country will be all the better for it.

Or as we say somewhere else -- ATTRACTION NOT PROMOTION. Make it look so cool, and so fun, to be an Obama supporter that they can't resist joining in.

28. This part pisses me off
"When included in the results, independent Ralph Nader, Libertarian Bob Barr and Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney grab a total of 7 percent of the vote in Indiana, 6 percent in Florida and Ohio, and 5 percent in North Carolina, which could be enough to influence the outcome in those states."

I wonder how much of that is Barr (good) and how much is McKinney and Nader (bad)?

31. Generally good news!
I'm disappointed in Wisconsin. They used to be one of the bluest of the "Big Ten" states, with Minnesota and Illinois. (obviously) Now, it's Illinois and my home state of Iowa, and Minnesota and Wisconsin are true swing states with Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Indiana was never on my swing state lists. If we win Indiana, we have a landslide. Still, this is catchable.

North Carolina wasn't on my swing state list either, but this is promising. Obama may be at a peak, but he could be rising in that state as well.

Florida and Ohio are shockers. I had basically dismissed them, thinking Colorado + Nevada/New Mexico was the ticket. But, we're tied in Florida and ahead in Ohio. This looking good for us!

33. Florida: Obama 48, McCain 48
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 07:49 AM by RNdaSilva
When they mentioned this on CNN, last night, they also said if you were to throw in 3rd party candidates that Obama would be leading 48-44, e.g., go Barr et al. Don't give up on Florida or Ohio. Doable.
