FLORIDA TIED -Obama/Plouffe throw down a $ 39 million gauntlet 'pay and play or lose'
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 03:46 PM by grantcart

Brilliant Pincer Movement by Obama and Plouffe has McCain boxed in.

They have been working Florida for weeks and this morning announce a

budget of $ 39 million to fight for every vote in Florida

Plouffe sends this message out this morning - he must have known that the polls were about to take a major jump for Florida, after the pundits said that the Obama investment in Florida wasn't paying off

Plouffe: We are going to spend $ 39 million in Florida. 1.4 million registered AA and young voters
In this video posted by Hope and Change:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x191908

Plouffe made the statement that the Obama campaign is committed to spending $ 39 million in Florida alone. That is a staggering amount when considering that McCain's entire budget is going to be $ 85 million --

(of course that does not count the RNC money that they will get but it is not clear yet what percent of that will be spent on Senate campaigns and what percent will be spent on McCain. Some Senate seats like Dole in NC are now considered endangered - see below)--

Plouffe restated his previous statement that there were 500,000+ African Americans that were registered and did not vote but has now added that there are 900,000 registered young voters that did not vote in 2004. These are registered voters and there are millions unregistered that they are going after to register.

It seems like any poll coming out of Florida has to be considered completely worthless until the election. Also it will be interesting to see how much money McCain puts into Florida to try and fight off Obama.

It seems that right now McCain is spending money like a drunken sailor and that he may be running dry by the time of the debates

NOW FROM JEZEBEL
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x7098128

CNN HAS FLORIDA TIED 48- 48

Obama has committed to spending $ 39 million and Florida is already moving their way with out the massive GOTV movement that will soon take place.

Obama and Plouffe have thrown down the gauntlet - stay and play in Florida and drain all the money for the

McCain campaign - and all the RNC money that you need to fight in the Senate campaigns or

Give up in Florida and lose the election outright - Brilliant Pincer Move

Imagine the discussions at the McCain committee right now - are the going to stay in Florida and spend one third of their money there, or give it up so that they can challenge Obama in several other states.

At the RNC they are going to smell a trap - if they throw all their money into Florida they could lose anyway but it will take all of the money that they wanted to help in the states where they have Senatorial candidates running

12. I am in Tallahassee....
....and @ Historically Black FAMU, there are @ least 12,000 students, and @ FSU there are 40,000. I'm worried, though, that some of the students are not knowing the right questions to ask as far as registration is concerned. I know for a fact that some are getting incorrect information.

I'm going to a meeting tonight, and I am going to demand that the people who are registering students know what the hell they're talking about.

We can win Florida by quite a bit if we execute well.

I'm at USF- my roommates are all first-time voters and I'm bringing them to our polling station with me on Nov. 4th!

There's been an Obama table near one of the student centers for the last few weeks, registering people to vote. I actually did a change of address there, still waiting for my card in the mail!

And winning Florida makes AZ in play. I want it a block of Western States, CO, NV, NM, with Montana and AZ. Then in 2012 the map will be solid blue with the racist old south, Utah and Idaho being the only holdouts.

And you raise an interesting point. The political parties need a lot of their money for the Congressional races, correct? It's not like they can throw it all to McCain after he's exhausted his spending cap...

14. There are 3 national committees each for the Democrats and Republicans.
A Senatorial campaign fund, a House campaign fund, and a campaign fund for the presidency and local government.

For us, it's the DSCC, DCCC, and the DNC.

Republicans have three equivalents.

McCain is raising money for the RNC, which can collect up to $28,500 per person per two-year cycle.

Florida didn't turn out well in 2000 or 2004, and $39 million is a lot.

Also, the electoral-vote.com poll average is McCain 50, Obama 43:

16. The also have internal polls that they are updating every hour

Go to the link Plouffe says that they have identified 1.5 million young and AA voters that sat home on 2004.

Also planning to spend $ 39 million doesn't mean that you spend it. If McCain doesn't join in they can cut back and put in just enough to win - or if McCain jumps in they can fake the expenditures early and get McCain committed and leave the state after McCain has spent his load.

15. If we can force McCain into spending big in Florida...
The more he spends here, the less he spends in VA, NC, OH, CO, NM, etc. Even losing Florida's not a huge deal for us, since it's never really figured heavily in the math. But if forcing McCain to match our spending here opens up other states for Obama... remember, we only need to flip one or two states to win, now that Iowa looks solidly in the bag. Forget flipping PA - McCain's gotta hold onto every red state from 2004 he can.

27. How I am trying to help in Florida in 2008...
I donated to $220 to House candidate Christine Jennings (D).

http://www.actblue.com/page/jennings2008

She lost a close election in 2006 because of electronic voting machines which made voters in a Democratic precinct skip the House race ("undervotes").

When she gets Democrats to the polls in 2008, it will help both her and Obama.

40. mccain's entire budget will be more than $85 million.
the mccain campaign is using a quasi-system wherein the rnc can funnel money to mccain's campaign. it is referred to as the rnc victory fund, and while it is tied to campaign finance restrictions, those parameters are mostly in how the money is used, not how the money is raised. the rnc victory fund has plenty of big donors who are willing to donate lots of money, and they are not tied to the same $4,600 limit that obama's candidacy is.

43. how anxious do you think that the RNC will be to throw money away on
Florida when they have a dozen Senators that are in trouble.

they will want to spread the money in NC OR ME as well as other states to help the ticket.

If the RNC uses a big chunk of their money in Florida it will cost dozens of Republicans down ticket in other states.

56. Ground zero - Florida
We need to win Florida. It would be very apropos for Florida to be the crowning state in Obama's win since they were the deal maker in 2000. The beginning of our national bush nightmare. It would be a huge redeeming moment for Florida to come through. It's worth the investment to break this vicious cycle in the South.

Come on Florida - stand up and deliver!

:applause:

the GOP is rich, they will funnel money through the party. McCain will have to spend but SO WILL WE!!!

PLEASE. Give until it hurts. I was lucky enough to have a tiny bit of money in savings which I took out to give the maximum to both the primary and the general election. I'm lucky and I know not everyone can.

But please. Do ALL that you can. This is so important.

If he is spending in all the swing states like he is spending in FL, he needs a TON MORE MONEY to pull this off.

Send what you can.

We need to pay special attention to Florida.

68. And all this while the shithouse burns down with McPalin inside
shouting strange things at the walls, missing that cloud he was having fun yelling at.. Meanwhile the Republicans cut the guard dog loose and tie the leash around the outhouse, leaving McCreepy no choice but to go down with the ship - which he learned to do so well while flying aeroplane machines :)

I'll bet they are wondering how to take them Both to the Vet and have them quietly put out of their misery :)

Okay, screw the Election.. I've got a way to settle all of this.. Give each man 40 million dollars in chips at a table in Vegas and let the Poker game begin - think of the Entertainment, the pundits would have a blast, until Palin was mistaken for a Prostitute, or waitress, McCain can pound on the table with one of his wooden arms and yell, "Dammit Woman! Got me a Beer an' a shot, forging a Nation is Thirsty work!"

About that time Obama would pull down his cool "Men in Black" shades and say, "You know little fella, it looks like you've already frittered away more than half of your money on whores and cheap whiskey, sure you want to tangle with me?"

McCain would fire back, with a wink at Palin, "Well now it's all up to this lady right here.. What'ta'ya think there lil' lady?"

Palin would hike up her boa feathers and say, "In what regards Churlee?"

The whiskey and money would flow, and since Obama Owns the House, He would Rule and McCain would Rue, the Day he tried to break The Bank.. :)

72. They're leading in Pennsylvania, small lead in Ohio. Why not throw down the gaunlet in Florida?
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 06:36 PM by Kerry2008
McCain can't match them on the money they're pouring in Florida, so we have the advantage. Plus this means they'll have to increase the amount of money they're pouring into Florida, which I'm sure is an awful lot, which will dry up funds they could be spending in other swing states and Obama leaning states.

Beautiful strategy. Use your war chest to try and pick off an opponent leaning state by overpowering him in TV ads and grassroots efforts, while also making him use his precious funds to pump more money he can't afford to spend into a state that once looked so promising for him--but where they're virtually tied.

73. BTW, Kerry lost Florida by less than 400,000 votes in 2004
I just hope to god that there isn't massive disenfranchisement of black voters like in 2000.

79. I talked to one of the volunteer coordinators here in Chicago where the
big campaign people are. His job is to organize people to go from Chicago to Iowa. There are others with paid jobs to organize people to go from Chicago to other states. We are talking about THOUSANDS of volunteers leaving IL to go elsewhere.

Another difference with this campaign is they have tons of people who want to volunteer in their offices brilliant young people with ivy league degrees and lots of ideas. You know Rachel Maddow types. I'm thinking mcstupid has lots of young people from bob jones university.
