5. I believe the term
refers to a guy in the West that refused to brand his cattle even though the law said he had to. Can't remember more than that.

6. Actually, no, but since so few people will know it's still funny.
A 'maverick' is an unbranded adult. In most parts of the west it was fair game for anyone who wanted to add to the herd. Many big ranches were started by rounding up mavericks to get started. I wouldn't suggest adopting that as a business strategy today, however.
