2. I've heard there are huge Voter Registration and GOTV drives at the many colleges here in NC
Especially the Traditional Black Colleges in the state like NC A&T, JC Smith, and Central. Not to mention I've volunteered at UNC Charlotte to GOTV. I think we're going to pull it out. As long as they don't discourage these kids by not having enough voting machines.

6. I just know we can do it lots of new voters registering Democratic this cycle,
and we have out raised republicans in NC. I'm not sure about the rest of the state, but last cycle Gaston County switched to optical scan paper ballots. I think that was a good idea. I'm still worried about election theft, but it's better than the damn touch screens.

4. teehee....I have a friend who's family is stationed at Ft. Bragg,
she's from Arizona originally and guess who she just loves? Of course, John McCain. So, when she wanted to talk to me about whether she should vote in NC or absentee in Arizona which is their home of record, I told her that it looked like McCain had NC sewn up and that since she was supporting him, her vote would probably do him more good in AZ.

I know. Dirty. But, we really do have a damned good shot at North Carolina.

5. Obama in Charlotte this Sunday
notice says 4th street between S.Davidson and S.McDowell, which sounds like it is outside, but then it says doors open at 11 and program begins at 1:00. The event is free, but they encourage people to RSVP to http://nc.barackobama.com/CharlotteChange Several of us plan to drive up from Columbia SC. And, don't forget that Nurse Ratchet (Sen Dole) has been running just a few points ahead of her challenger for the seat. This is one time I'm pulling for the Tarheels!

8. We can do it
I never see any McCain people out knocking on doors in Durham. They are out there, I've talked to them, but, for the first time, they are ashamed to admit it to me. There are a goodly number of fake Democrats here (OK, not fake, but folks who vote straight Democrat except for the president and the Senate). These folks would be in my face if I knocked on their doors four years ago. Now, most of them describe themselves as "leaning McCain." They are in the bag for him, of course, because they are Jesse Helms Democrats, but even they are not enthusiastic.

And they are fewer in number than they have ever been. Meanwhile, legions of Obama supporters are all fired up. If we can get good numbers in Durham and folks don't turn out to vote in Winston-Salem, we have an excellent shot.

11. Due to the beautifully perfect 50 state strategy (49 minus Ga.) we'll have high #s across NC
For once we won't have to rely on RDU and Charlotte to get us over the top. Every single county counts this year and it's going to get us on the bluer side of the map.

Keep on the bluer side, always on the bluer side, keep on the bluer side of life...

16. A 100 county strategy
A nice parallel to the 50 state strategy. We're knocking on the doors of people we wouldn't even have thought of knocking on four years ago because we'd written off all the Republicans and unaffiliateds.

14. You should see it where I live in Bessemer City.
It's a small town 45 minutes west from Charlotte, and as red of an area as you can get in NC. I rarely ever see a McCain sticker or yard sign, but I do see ones for Obama on a daily basis. I think your right these people are ashamed! The repbulican brand is in the dumps. Now if we can only get the Regan Dem's on board with us. I do not understand Regan Dem's my boss is one but I'm working on him. It's hard to not lose your patience with them.

18. A lot of it is about race
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 09:25 AM by Alcibiades
Our "Reagan Democrats" are different from those elsewhere.

For a lot of these people, George Wallace was the last Democrat they (or their parents) voted for at the presidential level. Most of these sorts of folks switched parties when Strom Thurmond did, for exactly the same reasons. Some of them stayed Democrats, however, and so we have a little slice of Jesse Helms' base right here in our own party. Many of these folks are no longer overtly racist, and would never say they would never vote for a black man, but what they say and do are sometimes different things.

Some of them, however, have come full circle, and really are not racist any more, and simply vote Republican today as a kind of reflex. We need to figure out who these folks are and persuade them. Tell them they took a shot at the Republicans and it hasn't worked out so good, so now it's time to come home to the Democratic Party.

10. Keep up the good work in NC!
Down here in Alabama, my vote for Obama will be little more than a symbolic gesture.

You guys are within sight of handing the repukes a major upset!

Rock on!

And lots of excitement. The polls are looking good, but don't even consider all the new voters being registered by Obama.

15. The poll above was of registered voters
The polls of "likely" voters are the ones that understate our support. The enthusiasm gap is palpable, and this usually means that the less-motivated party loses.

This will be our secret weapon. For years, the Republicans have worked the ground game hard, which is the only way a minority party like them has any chance. This time, we will have the data and the resources to get all our voters out, which we've never really had since the middle part of the century. That's what everybody's missing, because it's never been the case before. I think that, in retrospect, people will be amazed that there was ever any talk about this being a close race.

25. Whats the matter don't have time to click a link, and then discuss it's implications?
I guess I should copy and paste for ya.

"North Carolina is closely divided on the presidential race.

According to a new poll by Opinion Research Corp. of battleground states for CNN and Time magazine, Republican John McCain had 48 percent and Democrat Barack Obama had 47 percent.

Three percent said neither, and 1 percent said "other." Voters who were unsure were asked to say whom they were more likely to vote for.

"But other polls in the state suggest McCain has a larger lead, and when averaged in a new CNN poll of polls out Wednesday, McCain has a 10-point lead," CNN writes.

When third-party candidates were included in the question, McCain had 46 percent, Obama 45 percent, 2 percent selected Libertarian Bob Barr, 2 percent Ralph Nader and 1 percent Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney.

Of those, only Barr will be on the North Carolina ballot in November.

The poll of 910 registered voters was taken Sept. 14-16. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points."

26. Thanks
It's helpful to put the salient content into the post. I'm not sure saying that combined with other polls McCain has a 10-point lead is that comforting, but let's hope the polls keep trending for Obama going forward :)

29. No problem, just wanted people to read it before posting.
Just have to say though that I will trust that new pole before I trust the combined polls, what with the sand bagging polls of the last 2 weeks by the pollsters. I think we caught on to it and now they are trying to correct their polls. Cup half full and all that. :)
