Letters: Interview reveals Palin unqualified for VP

September 19, 2008

One of the oft repeated mantras of the McCain campaign is the patriotic sounding "Country First," but as with so many things that come out of the campaign, this appears to be more empty rhetoric. McCain's selection of Sarah Palin shows that he is willing to take the chance of leaving our great nation in the hands of an unqualified extremist if it increases his chance of winning an election. After hearing her give a speech that the Washington Post described as linking "the war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks," I was stunned. Even George Bush stopped repeating this thoroughly debunked talking point long ago. But it was her interview on ABC that erased any doubts I might have had about her lack of qualifications. When asked what she thought the "Bush Doctrine" was, Gov. Palin replied "His world view." His world view? Are you kidding me? How about unilateral pre-emptive strikes on any nation perceived to be a threat to our national security.

How can someone who never met an earmark she didn't like (according to Politico. com, Palin requested millions of federal dollars for everything from improving recreational halibut fishing to studying the mating habits of crabs and the DNA of harbor seals) get away with posing as a pork busting maverick? How can someone who doesn't understand the policies that led us into Iraq even be considered qualified to follow foreign policy experts like Dick Cheney (love him or hate him, he is a very well informed man) and Al Gore? But ultimately this is not about Sarah Palin, but rather about John McCain. So ask yourself, how can anyone respect the judgment of the candidate willing to put such a person "a chicken bone away from the presidency?"
