Obama for president (Seattle Times)
The Times recommends ...
Obama for president
As president, Barack Obama can get America moving forward again.

An economic Katrina is shattering the confidence of hardworking, middle-class Americans. The war that should never have been in Iraq is dragging on too long. At a time of huge challenge, the candidate with the intelligence, temperament and judgment to lead our nation to a better place is Sen. Barack Obama.

Obama should be the next president of the United States because he is the most qualified change agent. Obama is a little young, but also brilliant. If he sometimes seems brainy and professorial, that's OK. We need the leader of the free world to think things through, carefully. We have seen the sorry results of shooting from the hip ...

5. This happens to be the more conservative of the two Seattle papers.
A good sign!

15. I still think that's like saying
that Coke Zero is better than Diet Coke. When it comes down to it, they are pretty darn close. Seattle press is generally left-leaning.

23. The Seattle Times endorsed Bush in 2000.
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 07:39 PM by pnwmom
And it also endorsed Dino Rossi in 2004. And Dave Reichert (against Darcy Burner) in 2006.

:puke:

The newspaper has a history of endorsing candidates who favor reducing estate taxes. Why it endorsed a jerk like Rossi, I do not know. In any case, Democrats can't count on a Seattle Times endorsement. Its record is quite mixed.

35. The Seattle Times endorsed more Republicans than Democrats THIS YEAR.
And, as you said, the estate tax is the Seattle Times editorial board's lynchpin issue. That's pretty much all they care about, at least until Frank Blethen has to pay up.

10. Great! Now if the Chicago Tribune endorses him I will faint from shock.
Even though they damn well SHOULD endorse him. It's like the difference between the finest meal in the world and a plate full of pig shit.

20. You know what I think about the Tribune...I don't think they'll endorse anyone.
I think they'll "sadly" say that both candidates are so flawed they can't give an endorsement.

We will NOT see a Obama endorsement from the Chicago Tribune. They SHOULD as you said. But, gotta keep that refusing to endorse a Democrat thing going. :eyes:

28. I bet you're right. You know, I canceled my subscription earlier this year, mostly because
I was sick of having so much paper around to recycle when I could get my news online anyway. But the reason I gave them was that I was tired of my hometown paper not reflecting true Chicagoans. Chicago is a city of Democrats, why should our largest paper be so effing Republican? It makes no sense.

I mean yes, they have endorsed some Republicans, but that is to be expected.

34. What? The Times editorial board is notoriously conservative.
Here's an analysis from Horse's Ass on this year's endorsements:

Have we become a nation that salutes and encourages ignorance?

Hopefully this is just the start of rejecting the "who'd you like to have a beer with" factor.
