George Gerber: Albert Einstein vs. McCain/Palin
George Gerber: Albert Einstein vs. McCain/Palin

If one were to apply Einstein's General Theory of Relativity to the current campaign season, we might be able to contrast it with the McCain/Palin Theory of Obfuscation.

Einstein proposed that time, space, and light can all be bent and that different observers can all see the same event differently. Sounds just like all the political nonsense we have been focused on for the last few weeks. The McCain/Palin theory states simply that everything can be bent, including the truth.

Some observers have seen pigs with lipstick while others have seen bridges to nowhere. Some have seen a fundamentally strong economy while others have seen the collapse of Wall Street and its oldest and most venerable institutions. Some have seen Russia from Alaska while some have seen the ice between the two melting away like butter. Some have seen Sarah Palin as a reformer while others have seen her as a terminator. And the list goes on.

According to Einstein, the perceptions are different because of the observer's relative position to the events. My observations as someone totally outside the political arena conform to the Theory of Relativity but not to the Theory of Obfuscation. For instance:

McCain believes he is mature. I believe he is old.

McCain believes he is a war hero. I believe everybody who served their country in a time of war are war heroes.

Palin believes she knows the difference between a sheep and a wolf. I believe she is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

McCain believes his hero status qualifies him to be President of the United States. I believe every person who fought for this country is also qualified to be President of the United States.

McCain believes only military men are heroes. I believe most heroes are average Americans who fight every day of their lives to feed, clothe, and shelter their families regardless of their military status.

Palin believes she is qualified to be Vice President or President. I believe she is qualified to be an eyeglass lobbyist and that I am qualified to be Vice President. After all, I can see Starbucks from my house and the American people just love Starbucks. It gives me international experience since many of their blends come from other countries. And I know good coffee.

McCain and Palin believe they can change everything about the Washington establishment. I believe they don't even know how to make change.

McCain and Palin believe they are the center of the universe. I believe they are the center of nothing, a waste of time, and have yet to see the light.
